This will in no way be an impartial, objective preview. I was ready to name Grimes ' latest effort Visions the "Best Album of 20123 after I heard it for the first time. I was ready to bestow the title of "Best Music Video of 20123 on her video for Visions stand-out cut "Oblivion". For my money, Grimes is making some of the most intriguing music today. Seriously, just watch the "Oblivion" video, below. I've showed it to at least 20 people at this [...]

Montreal's Grimes was in town for two nights this weekend, playing sold out shows at Lee's Palace . Her debut album Visions has been excitedly received around the globe and is up for the $30,000 Polaris Prize tonight. She performed with a surprisingly minimal stage set up (some fake flowers....BUBBLES! a couple girls wearing shower curtains?), though I'm not sure what I was expecting. Her energy was super high and so was the audience's — culminating with the track "Genesis" and everyone being invited on stage, "but [...]

You'd be hard pressed to find a week so far this year during which so many amazing bands have all been in town. With Beach House , Kishi Bashi , Wilco , Grimes , Oberhofer , Frank Ocean , King Khan & The Shrines , Caveman , Givers , Gary Clark Jr. , and the Catalpa music festival ( The Black Keys , Snoog Dogg , TV on the Radio , and more) all competing for our time and money, you better make a decision [...]
Weekly Playlist 79 features The Cast of Cheers, Bloc Party, Big Scary, Jinja Safari, The Temper Trap, Blur, Matt and Kim, and Grimes We thought we'd reintroduce a synopsis of the tracks we've chosen and why we like them! The Cast of Cheers - Trucks at Night Not much more to say about these lads, then solid. This track is just bloody good. Catchy drumming intro into a bouncy anthem, layered with little guitar flicks. Awesome. MZ Bloc Party - Octopus [...]

In the grand tradition of our month-plus-early list of the year's best albums so far , here's a look at the music videos that made us look twice this year. We get bombarded with these things every day, and so many of them seem to be made with minimal effort: Fuzzy stock footage, all-lens-flare romantic cinematography, bits of imagery that barely relate to each other, let alone the song. But if the selection of clips below teaches us anything, it's that there are about a million different ways to make an effective video; all you really need is a [...]

Exceptional experimental musicians make me ecstatic. Every so often there comes a wave of really good music and an argument can be made the most recent occurrence came on January 31, 2012. Two of my favorite albums of the year, Gotye’s Making Mirrors and Lana Del Rey’s Born to Die, were released on the same day. You can argue its pure coincidence, but I think not. The old proverb “all good things come in threes” comes to mind when discussing this auspicious occurrence and Grimes latest album Visions, which was also released on January 31, 2012, proves my [...]

a) La mejor traducción literal para el término "oblivion" en español sería la que titula esta entrada. b) También es un single de Grimes y, creo, la mejor canción de un disco más o menos fome. c) Tiene un vídeo increíble. And now another play i would actIf you could help me outIt's hard to understandCause when you're running by yourselfIt's hard to find someone to hold your hand And now the empathy empowers meBut i will wait foreverI need someone nowTo look into my eyes [...]

Arbutus Buy here Twenty-something Claire Boucher has produced her own distinctive style of sound in her short career, something that must frustrate the hell out of those people who must classify everything they hear. As we have said here before, the proliferation of naming genres within genres has become something of a joke, and while Grimes drives down the avenue of electro, [...]

It seems there is no end to the creative output of Claire Boucher. Last month, she released her third album under the moniker Grimes . Visions had quite a legacy to live up to: 2011’s EP Darkbloom was critically acclaimed and 2010 saw not one, but two full albums, Geidi Primes and Halfaxa , both of which helped to catapult Boucher into indie-music stardom. Her songs are as bizarre as her videos, which typically feature her behaving in ways that defy convention. The video for Visions’ “Oblivion” cuts between scenes of Boucher [...]
