The Brit troubadour has evidently developed a penchant for the past, which stifles the forward-thinking bent of his debut. Amid the overtures of 2008, as part of PopMatters' retrospective mop-up of the previous twelve months' music, I confidently predicted that it was to be Eugene McGuinness's year. Here was a young man, I felt, that would go big-with-a-capital-B; bubbly, infectious, and direct enough for the mainstream, yet with a waggishly perceptive lyrical bent to bewitch imaginations, and the disregard for lyrical fashion to make him conspicuous. I even ventured a comparison to Patrick Wolf,...

Domino are on a hot streak right now. It seems like they are releasing a hefty percentage of the best indie music right now and they are doing so at an unbelievably prolific rate. So It's the turn of Eugene McGuiness. Good news his debut album is superb. It's a diverse mix of indie, pop, punk and rock. There's something for everyone here, fast paced punk tracks like 'Fonz', indie folk mellow tracks like 'Those Old Black And White Movies' and drum filled indie monsters like 'Nightshift'. Expect to hear a lot more from [...]
You're not often let down by a member of the Domino Records roster (whose famous alumi include Pavement and ...Trail Of The Dead, along with more recent luminaires Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys), so it was pretty unsurprising when last year's mini album from Eugene McGuinness was well received. And isn't just extra nice when Domino decide to give away one of his songs for free? Admittedly, the freebie is in aid of Eugene's self titled full length album dealio as well as the [ digital download service ] that Domino is [...]
Returning to London after a year long hiatus, I resolved to throw myself back into the thick of things, you know what that means kids, a gig double header. And not just any gig double header - A Double Six Records Double Header (That's A Double Six Records, A Sub Division of the Domino Recording Co Double Header). Brief is how I shall try and keep this as I am growing averse to live reviews - they are all beset by the same problems and reporting them never changes. I can only hope to use whatever problems arise [...]

Eugene McGuinness earned his BTW bona fides last year on the back of the great, pseudo-spooky pop romp (and memorable cartoony clip) "Monsters Under The Bed." The video wound up being a YouTube front pager, and the single wound up on the eight track mini-album The Advanced Learning Of Eugene McGuinness . Still enamored with his name, then, Eugene's promising a self-titled full length debut this October. Its first single "Moscow State Circus" is another ramshackle jangler, albeit sunnier, and packing a video featuring linedancing fencers, sorta like that WMMF video without the Lance Armstrong.
