OUTDOOR SCHOOL PROGRAMS BENEFIT: KYLE MORTON, YOUR RIVAL, PROFCAL, THE SHADES ( Backspace , 115 NW 5th) Chances are your fondest school-day memories don't involve sitting at a desk, but if you went to outdoor school, it's a different story, one filled with dirty boogers, slug-related dares, and bad skits—what childhood's all about. Tonight's music—featuring Typhoon's Kyle Morton!—is a benefit to keep the Multnomah County Outdoor School afloat. MARJORIE SKINNER THE ETTES, HANS CONDOR, MY GOODNESS ( Doug Fir , [...]
Playing ribfest sounds like a punchline, for sure. But in recent years the organizers of Chicago's Ribfest in North Center have booked some decent musical acts. This year's lineup includes some locals, including Waco Brothers, My Gold Mask and Ezra Furman & the Harpoons . There are also sets by garage rockers The Ettes , rockabilly vets the Legendary Shack Shakers , country rocker Hayes Carll and the Twin Cities' Tapes 'n Tapes . All in all, it's a good lineup ... especially for a ribfest. [...]

I hate that you can spend so much time listening to music and still miss so many great bands that are out there. The flip side of that is great, though: there's always a new opportunity to find something you love. A group or artist from any era or genre can catch your ear and you're a new fan. Good Music is Definitely Capable of Making you Move. (This We Know...) And great music can lead you to good videos... But, it's a rare thing these days (when everyone makes music videos it seems - there's just so much out there) that a video will lead us to a really great rock n roll band. But that's exactly what has happened with The Ettes. They just rock AND they know how to make kick ass videos! The Ettes at SxSW [...]

By eh The Ettes, "Marathon" I had kind of a lackluster start to my CMJ. I don't know whether it was poor planning on my part, skipping dinner (which also falls under poor planning) or my burgeoning cold, but I wasn't very excited about anything last night. I started my night at the Bowery to see Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson . His style is hard to pin down, mostly because he's not only a stylistic chameleon, but vocally he sounds like someone different [...]
