Last night I experienced something so unforgettable and so mind-blowing that I am just happy to share with the readers on Mindinversion.net. I love music so much, yet I find it incredibly hard to write to an audience while being succinct, to the point, factual-in great depth, and at the same time remain fair, interesting, and unbiased. Like, this is what I truly listen to. I am not just pushing this to promote someone I know. So when I come across an experience such as this I must share. I am going to avoid the small details, not do a bio, [...]

Graphics by Eric Weiner What could be better than a festival of New York City's best food, drink, and music? The answer is nothing. The Great Googa Mooga festival , brought to you by the same folks that put on Bonnaroo, is taking over Brooklyn this weekend for the second year in a row and we couldn't be more excited. After a very successful launch last year, the festival is back and looking to be better than ever. A quick rundown of the best the festival has to offer below! [...]
Inevitably, I always find an album or two sometime after the new year that I wish I had discovered before my year-end best list. Father John Misty falls in that camp for me this year. The only explanation I have for ignoring a fairly well-known artist last year is guilt by association. Father John Misty is Joshua Tillman , the former drummer for Fleet Foxes . Because I'm not a big Fleet Foxes fan, I assumed I wouldn't like Tillman's own band. I was definitely wrong. Father John Misty is dark, intense, [...]

The votes are in! The numbers are crunched! You clearly loved the musical class of 2012 because you voted in droves! Here's a look and listen at how the top ten played out according to listeners. Thanks for listening, thanks for voting, and here's to great things ahead in 2013! Without further ado... 1- Father John M isty / Fear [...]
I'm gonna do something I normally don't do, which is to repost someone else's writing in its entirety because I think it is such a succinctly written, thoughtful and entertaining little blurb. A lot of music writing you read these days is done without any thought or investment or longwindedly tryin'a sound smart and academic. I just love when a recommendation feels slapdash and on the fly and comes from a place of true appreciation, like a friend who says "oh man you gotta listen to this because..." and rattles off one [...]

It's that time of year again. The holidays are upon us, December is flying by, it's getting colder (in theory- Nashville did not so much get the memo on that one), and the music industry is mostly on an extended vacation. Record releases have basically come to a halt, tours are winding down, awards season is preparing to gear up, and basically every single magazine and website that writes about music is releasing a year-end list in some form or another. We at No Country are preparing our own year-end lists for release very soon, but in the time being [...]

2012 has been a pretty good year for albums - and an eclectic one too. From the pounding electronic-soup-hop throb of El-P through to Beta Band -esque newcomers Django Django , this year‘s seen old acts returning to form and newcomers snatching at brilliance. Looking at the 2012 ‘top albums of the year’ lists that have been published elsewhere, a handful of names keep popping up. And a few of them appear here too. For hip-hop heads Kendrick Lamar [...]
10. M.I.A. - "Bad Girls" [Dir. Romain Gavras] It doesn't take an expert to say: it hasn't been the best decade for music videos. What works has been explored and re-explored far past the point of saturation, resulting in desperate attempts at grandeur and 1,001 takes (and counting) on "Thriller". If it's big, it's overblown, if it's small, it's a pitiable, negligible afterthought, with poor Rick Ross stuck filming himself on a boat. M.I.A., by very design, is incapable of such a bore. The complete dominance of character the defines [...]

2012 was many things. But to me in the end it became the year of the epic. The epic song. The song that stretches and expands your horizons. Makes you tremble in its wake. It's not relaxing. But it's not meant to be that way. Halfway through the year I really had Father John Misty's "Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings" as my song of the year. What a song it is. So effortlessly great and wondrous. I also loved the hypnotic "Myth" by Beach House. But in the end it was a resurrected song by [...]

We don't normally post about a show this far in advance, but Father John Misty has put out one of my favorite albums of 2012, so it warrants that we get this on the calendar now. FJM will be at Headliners on January 9, 2013! Tix go on sale Friday (11/2). Backseat is hitting the road this weekend, and we are going to see FJM at the Bluebird in Denver. We'll report back after. In the meantime, check out some of his videos below. Pretty wild. Details: [...]
As of yet, I have not listened to much of the Fleet Foxes' collection. I did give a former member's new solo act a try recently though. Josh Tillman the former drummer and a vocal provider is Father John Misty and Father Jon Misty put out his first album, Fear Fun, earlier this Spring. I must say [...] Like this? The end of the month of October holds huge opportunities for music lovers in the hub of the Milwaukee/Chicago area. And although this particular tour is skipping Milwaukee, it's a must-see for me, so making the trek to Chicago will definitely be worth it. I mean, what better way to spend the days before Halloween than with the tongue-in-cheek cunning of Josh Tillman aka Father John Misty at one of my favorite venues in America's Midwest? I'm far-reached to find one, and if you have something better, I dare you to [...]
I think we can all agree that this is a weird week. Heavy on legends, but plenty of places where you can experiment, sonically. Please, have fun with it!
