Last SXSW, my pal Jefe and I got pretty bombed on Friday . After catching a great and very upbeat set by Pickwick , Jefe wound up checking IDs at the front door of Antone's and I wound up sitting at the bar trying to fight on fumes. Well, after Pickwick was the act Cold Specks. She had a beautiful voice but after rocking all day, being bombed and a sunburned it was tough to fully appreciate how amazing she was. Because of that, I largely ignored her album until emusic named it their favorite album [...]

Cold Specks is Canadian-born, London-based singer-songwriter Al Spx and she calls her sound "doom soul." My experience with Cold Specks' debut, I Predict a Graceful Expulsion, has been similar to my evolving, seasonally-affected relationship with Kate Bush's 50 Words for Snow. Though I always loved Cold Specks' raspy voice, I just couldn't connect with the [...]
Cold Specks found its stage name in James Joyce’s Ulysses: “Born all in the dark wormy earth, cold specks of fire, evil, lights, and shining in the darkness.”

Cold Specks , might be their year to explode. Being featured on BBC’s Later… With Jools Holland and some loving from the critics. I was lucky enough to see them open up for St.Vincent back on December 16, 2011 . Cold Specks is the stage name of Canadian singer-songwriter now based in London, UK Al Spx. Apparently it is not her real name but it is intriguing and elusive. I Predict A Expulsion, the debut album will drop on May 22, 2012 on Arts & Crafts in North [...]

Hey there! You should read this original post on the hill by going here: Reviews:: Cold Specks I Predict A Graceful Expulsion When the year-end think pieces of 2012 hit the internet, chances are we will be flooded with more Lana Del Ray stories than we can withstand. Hundreds of jokes, regrets and "told you so" removals from the situation, unwilling to admit mistakes. The surprising draw of "Video Games" will be forgotten, the scars too fresh. Too many pundits citing some fictional, altruistic search for authenticity feel burned by the fact [...]
Sean threw this my way, and I'll be darned if that guy doesn't have a good ear. Al Spx (not her real name) is Cold Specks, a lady Canadian of the lonely soul kind. Her song "Holland" has gotten wide attention ever since the 73 released and her set at this year's SXSW got a [...]
Allright - after the must-sees comes the should-sees. I hope to hear all these, but my must-sees overrule these! Here are a few we are looking forward to:
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Arts & Crafts Cold Specks ' Al Spx likes her anonymity. Spx isn't her real name and Cold Specks is just one of many aliases the singer-songwriter has cycled through, but Spx's reasoning behind the mystery is quite simple. "Out of respect for my family," Spx tells Spinner. "They're really religious and probably wouldn't approve [of me using my real name] so I just [...]

Facebook / coldspecks.com/ The spring solstice might have been just a few days ago but that doesn't stop one of my ' Tips for 2012 ' Al Spx better known as Cold Specks from stopping me in my tracks with her latest unseasonally named track "Winter Solstice". Earlier taster "Holland" started restrained and peaceful allowing Al's incredible soulful voice to floor you before blossoming to a strong, defiant number and "Winter Solstice" is similar in that effect, its flow is beautiful and elegant, managing to be both lyrically dark and [...]
Cold Specks will release the debut album I Predict A Graceful Expulsion on May 22nd. http://www.coldspecks.com/ http://mute.com/

In addition to apparently torrential rain at SXSW Interactive this week (which my hair is SUPER EXCITED ABOUT), the torrent of people are already flooding into the city in preparation for our annual music sleep-away camp. The music portion starts on Wednesday, and I'll be heading down tomorrow for my panel on Tuesday morning at 9:30m ( Man vs Machine: New Music Discovery ). I always try to brace myself with a shortlist of bands that I'd like to try to see in all the wonderful madness; here are my personal picks for [...]
We've been trawling through a whole mass of videos recently and here are some of our favourites assembled for your viewing and listening pleasure. First up is Crybaby's video for excellent debut I Cherish The Heartbreak More Than The Love That I Lost , shot in the gloomy surrounds of Bristol hospital and is a noirish loveletter to the exquisite pain of a broken heart. a Hotly tipped Essex 4-piece The Milk's new single Broke Up The Family is [...]

Today we have you "Holland." It's by Cold Specks , the moniker of singer/songwr i ter Al Spx . Cold Specks will release their debut album, I Predict A Graceful E xp ulsion via Mute Records on May 22 . The Olivier Groulx directed video can b e seen at the bottom [...]

Ready to learn a new genre? "Doom Soul." That's how Cold Specks describes her music. Songwriter/vocalist Al Spx is from Canada and lives in London, and she's gearing up to release her debut album with Mute on May 22nd. "Holland" is dark and ominous, but it's the "soul" part of this that makes it really interesting. Instead of sounding like some lonely soul singing about death, she captures a much bigger picture that feels very human and universal. And if you're curious, the band’s name is taken from a line in James Joyce’s Ulysses: "Born all in the dark [...]

Cold Specks lit up many new music blogs last year with a masterly song called Holland , her rich weightily restrained soulful vocal providing one of those stop you in your tracks moments. We featured the track on Breaking More Waves although probably didn’t do Cold Specks the justice she deserved, lumping the stream of the song into one of our Saturday Surf features rather than give it its own post. So now is time to make amends [...]
