This has created enough speculation in adult minds that I’ve removed the offending shape from the Tupperware shape o ball that has been resident on our sitting room floor for over a year. And for the life of me I had no idea the song was from (qwerty device fans) Alt-J as it arrived in my inbox tagged with a triangular shape for the band name (which is 4real as I later found out). Me being the way I am I would have not given the tune as good a hearing if I’d known it was by this most popular [...]

At the Brits last night the band accidentaly spilled the beans on weather they'll be playing the festival, and as we know now they shall be gracing the fields come June. However, Glastonbury Festival is yet to officially confirm any acts for this year's even. Check back in the coming days and weeks to find out more on Glastonbury 2013. Positioned at the helm of the "British band resurgence" is indie rock quartet, Alt-J or ∆ (for Mac users) who saw boast-worthy record sales last year in both the US and UK. They took home the 2012 Mercury Award for their inaugural album, An Awesome Wave and continue to dominate with several BRIT Award nominations this year. Yesterday they released the perfect visual accompaniment, directed by Alex Southam, for the trip-hop inspired, "Tesselate". As described by the band, the video is 'a twist on Italian Renaissance painter Raphael's 'The School of Athens', set in a modern day [...]
I have been jamming to this Alt-J album a lot recently. An Awesome Wave, came out May of 2012 and has had the privilege of making many blogs top of year lists. Such as: Listen Before You Buy, The De Mello Theory, A Has Been That Never Was, The Needle Drop, and more . I had trouble [...] Like this? If they’re not the biggest breakthrough group of the year, Alt-J certainly deserve to be included in the debate. With their fantastically dreamy alt-pop, Alt-J blasted into the consciousness of the public, earning massive critical praise that culminated in them taking home the 2012 Mercury Prize. By combining incredibly complex songwriting with instrumentals that bridge a variety of genres ranging from folk to pop to alt rock, Alt-J has paved the way for more future success. One of the things that makes An Awesome Wave so special is the fact that it [...]
For the second interview, we asked a few questions to the Belgian band Montevideo. They recently released the album "Personal Space", which was produced by Joakim Bouaziz. I highly suggest to purchase it, you won't regret it! It's the kind ... Continue reading

Alt-J (or ∆, if you prefer) were announced today as the winners of the 2012 Mercury Prize for their excellent debut effort, An Awesome Wave. It's not the first time a debut has won the prize-- in fact, it seems to happen more often than not (The xx, Antony & the Johnsons, and Franz Ferdinand are all recent examples). Alt-J's already anticipated Portland date December 5th at the Star Theater just got a little hotter. To refresh, the award is given annually by musicians, executives, and journalists, among others, [...]

∆, pronounced Alt-J (the Mac keyboard command for the Greek symbol delta), are a British art-rock band formed by Leeds University grads (and open hallucinogen enthusiasts) who majored in Literature and Fine Arts. Almost every song on An Awesome Wave has its own beautifully produced music video. Don’t be fooled by the Prince-like symbol identification, ∆ is the first original and groundbreaking band in years because they are just as much meant to be seen as heard. Many of the videos are intentionally oxymoronic, lending themselves to a soundtrack in coordinated serendipity. Tom Midlane of [...]

During their first ever trip to New York City just a couple months ago, Alt-J played to a half filled room at Merucry Lounge as direct support to We Are Serenades . Now, with their debut album arriving in the states on September 18 via Canvasback , the band is poised to take our city by storm with two already sold out shows. Most impressive considering they're also headlining Bowery Ballroom on September 12. Of course, they're not the only band in town this week worth seeing. Check out Wild Nothing with Grimes , [...]

Naming a band according to some random set of symbols is nothing really new. Prince did it long ago and it seems to be gaining popularity once again with !!! and a number of other names that our blog won't support the characters of. The one problem with this route is that you either get a potential fan that scoffs and never gives a listen or you get the curious that will take the dive. Before you look at Alt-J, who uses the Greek sign Delta as their symbol but goes by the name Alt-J because that's the key command [...]
Reminded by IGIF today to the amazing video that is "Tessellate" by British group Alt-J (or the keyboard symbol ∆). The treatment is a twist on Italian Renaissance painter Raphael's 'The School of Athens', set in a modern day gangster's paradise. "Tessellate" appears on Alt-J's debut album An Awesome Wave .
You've probably heard about Alt-J by now but I'm on a bender of their upcoming LP An Awesome Wav , even though I've been listening to it in MP3. Corny jokes aside, these British dudes can craft some smoothly eerie tunes that bend toward an atmospheric Radiohead with epic fusions of R&B rhythm and billowing balladry. Lead singer Joe Newman has an annunciation that reminds me of a schizophrenic Sean Hayes ( listen here , then decide) that is smooth yet unpredictable. Their debut LP is very solid and I [...]
Six producers worth their salt is a weekly column which features six relevant, up-and-coming, under-exposed, or disruptively innovative musicians in a particular genre-space. Every Friday we’ll put together a list of a half-dozen must-listen artists that are – or we expect to be – making waves in the coming months. This week’s “Six Producers Worth Their Salt” features a South African hipster, the best band to surface from suburbia, and a disco reviving super couple. It also features four gents who have given geometry a new found sex appeal, a bedroom producer [...]
alt-J have premiered their new video for "Tessellate" exclusively on Noisey. Directed by Alex Southam, the video is a twist on Italian Renaissance painter Raphael's "The School of Athens," seen through a modern day lens that Raphael may not have had in mind. "Tessellate" will appear on alt-J's debut album, An Awesome Wave, to be released September 18th via Canvasback.

My interview with Alt-J (for Yours Truly’s Pen Pal Series) + “Tessellate” Video In the time before cellphones and text messaging, gchat and Airtime, it’s not that we had less to say, there were just less ways to say it. We couldn’t overshare if we wanted to. When you think about it, penpals are the original Facebook. A way to connect with people you have known your whole life, or maybe met just once, but you want to get to know better. It’s not so much the words that are meant to be looked at, it’s [...]
