On Friday night Mastodon played "Oblivion" on the Late Show with David Letterman

David Letterman continues to get amazing bands on his program. Recently it was Animal Collective followed by The Killers and now the metal band that even hipsters enjoy: Mastodon. They brought their raucous sound to the Ed Sullivan Theater in NYC and even prompted Dave to utter the words " I'm frightened" before they went into their song "Oblivion". Mastodon frighten someone? Oh come now. They're such nice looking boys!

I was initially dismissive of Crack The Skye , but tried approaching it with an open mind since I liked loved much of Mastodon's back catalog. After dozens of listens and discussions with folks who dig it, though, I have to come clean: I think it's tepid and overblown in the most boring ways. That said, my ears still ringing from last night's entertaining Brutal Truth set, it is the record that gave the "Grammy-nominated rock 'n' roll band from Atlanta" a chance to "frighten" Letterman. Dave usually gets some good performers on his show-this one was very special. Like he says before Mastodon rips into "Oblivion": "I won't lie to you ... I'm frightened." It's OK, Dave ... Slayer 's new album is out July 7. Consider this a primer.
