Record Store Day

Interview: Brendan Toller (director of I Need That Record)

I Need That Record! Trailer!
Brendan Toller's I Need that Record! is a fabulous documentary that explores the changes in the music business over the last two decades, with a focus on independent record stores. Independent record stores are closing in mass numbers, while a new generation is discovering new music on the internet instead from a clerk. While it would be simple to say that file sharing is responsible for these

I Need That Record: The Death (or Possible Survival) of the Independent Record Store I Need That Record , an independent documentary by Brendan Toller, was shown at San Francisco's Artists' Television Access as part of Noise Pop 2009. The feature-length film examines the reason for the closing of over 3,000 independent record stores in the past decade. The movie looks at the effect of the rise of e-commerce, a dwindling in diversified support from corporate radio, the rise of the digital music revolution, and the missteps of the major record labels. As the overall record industry has compounding years with fewer [...]

"Yes, yes, I know. It's easier to download music, and probably cheaper. But what's playing on your favorite download store when you walk into it?" Good question Nick Hornby. Considering today is Record Store Day , don't you iPod elitists think you ought to go down to your local Wal-Mart and buy the new Mariah Carey CD to ensure those pesky mom and pop record shops go out of business once and for... "I Need That Record" is a documentary feature examining why over 3000 independent record stores have closed across the U.S. in the past decade. Are they going to die off? Will they survive? Record stores serve as important community spaces that provide foundations for new musical and artistic scenes and movements, a place where unique under the radar bands have been continuously supported, a place where the underground can thrive, a place where independent thought is encouraged and challenged, a place where people of different ages, races, and taste can mix and mingle face to face. Brick and Mortal

I Need That Record! Trailer!
by crustcake gerf (NYC) It's no secret that independent record stores are a dying breed. You know who the number one music retailer in the United States is? Wal-Mart. But, although record stores are closing in droves and more and more people are acquiring music by digital means, I certainly don't think record stores will disappear altogether, especially from bigger markets such as LA and New York. Compact Disc sales may be plummeting, but overall music consumption is at an all-time high, and there is growing a niche market for vinyl [...]

Celebrate Record Store Day!

I Need That Record! Trailer!
Tomorrow is Record Store Day and considering we have one of the best independent record stores in the country, Soungarden , there is no excuse not to head on over to Fell's Point and support a great baltimore institution. Living in Baltimore, some people might take Soundgarden for granted , but I have friends who lived in baltimore and now live elsewhere (Denver, DC, NYC) and they swear there isn't anything quite like soundgarden. Whenever they come back to visit, it is one of our first stops, and usually ends up being a great day. [...]
