Filed under: Band of the Week Japandroids . It's the kind of name which conjures up visions of Blade Runner-esque mechanical replicants doing their automaton activities under the cold glare of Tokyo streetlights. Sadly, the band in question aren't shiny mechanical musicians built by some far-thinking Japanese industrial concern, but a very much carbon-based duo from Vancouver, Canada. A duo that manage to make one hell of a racket. According to their own press, the word is "maximal" -- "a two piece band trying to sound like a [...]

There aren't a ton of great albums that really rock this year. One exception is Japandroids' debut "Post-Nothing." By now, you may have heard the spiel about two guys trying to sound like five guys but it's true. They have a big sound. "It's a lot of fun to have the freedom to really go off without having to sync up with a bass line or get in the way of two guitar melodies or whatever," drummer-vocalist David Prowse tells the Sun-Times . The band plays Schubas [...]
Atlanta ladies take a victory lap in support of their second album, drummer to appear on "LA Ink"
Japandroids play tonight at Holocene. They sound (and look) like this: Japandroids have never played Portland before. Here is an article from this week's paper about them. Still need a reason? Okay, here you go: Holocene has air conditioning. In fact, you are welcome to go to the show early and hang out in the lounge with a frosty cocktail. Canadian duo records the freshest feel-good album of the summer.

Kate Moss bought herself a large bronze Buddha statue because Kate Moss converted to Buddhism. Who gives a fuck? To be honest, I do. If the rags will continue reporting on her latest whim, we'll have shelves in stores bulging out with cheap plastic buddhas soon. I've been fascinated by Buddhism for many years now, but never have I even thought of calling myself a buddhist, knowing that it involves much more than renewing your yogaclass subscription every year. After Kate Moss and Eurovision I was in need of some sincerity which I found in this week's band, [...]

Japandroids Post-Nothing (2009, Unfamiliar) RIYL = rock n' roll summer jams Mighty capes and stars, these dudes are rockin'! Seriously. And just in time for summer too. Sheesh. Yesterday I dropped off my last final up at the U (holla!) and I was making my way back through the sunny streets of Salt Lake City with Sass and our new babe and I just couldn't help but grin, roll down the windows and blast Post-Nothing (well, 'blast' may be the wrong word – the kids only 2 months old after all - [...]
