Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero's took to the main stage at Webster Hall this past Thursday to perform their brand of throw back, big band 60s tunes. The 11-piece crowded the stage complete with a backdrop reminiscent of the yellow brick road headed to Oz. The performance started strong with driving tunes like 40 Day Daydream and the audience was eager to participate. The gang vocals that texture to the album Up From Below encouraged the audience to join in throughout the set. When the band was on to their last two [...]

A really good pop song is a really good pop song. I put "Home" on my 2009 Favorite Songs List, and people have continuously picked it out as one of the songs they liked most. I think nearly everyone has heard it by now, whether from a music blog or a commercial, but perhaps you haven't seen the video above. It's by far the most charming performance I've ever seen on a late night television talk show. They have absolutely no regard for the camera, seem like total weirdos, and Jade Castronos is one of the most compellingly honest performers [...]

Next on my live music calendar is June 22nd for Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros . I knew little about this group until I caught their set on the Coachella webcast . It was the highlight of my armchair weekend at Coachella. The group is the brainchild of Alex Ebert (aka Edward Sharpe). They definitely bring the communal, hippie vibe; and it's hard not to see Ebert as the prophet-like Jesus figure among his merry band of peace loving misfits (at least they look & act like the love peace). The music itself is [...]
For any of those brave souls headed to Manchester, Tennessee this Thursday, I thought I'd just give you a brief rundown of those artists I'm most excited to see (and thus, those that you should check out if you get a chance!) 1. Frontier Ruckus: This new-folk outfit weaves clever and GRE-level vocabulary lyrics throughout all of its songs while managing to keep you wildly intrigued by the lead singer's unique voice and the suspender-clad banjo player. I saw them play a short set earlier this year in Nashville, and it was beyond noteworthy. Definitely catch [...]

I was browsing around NPR's All Song Considered: Tiny Desk Concerts and found this band. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. The band is fronted by Alex Ebert, [...]

So yeah I kind of wrote out this long post only to accidentally delete it. I'll try to recreate the magic that I produced nearly 27 minutes ago. This morning started out on a sour note when I learned that Woxy.com was once again being put to rest. Another voice for independent music was dying out (at 9:00am to be exact) and it will make discovering new artists that much harder for people. Any way check out a few [...]
Cute song! Nice band! ∆ Dica do PLito
We've been big fans of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes since '40 Day Dream' made itself known to us last summer. But we tend to handle our records carefully by the sides to avoid fingerprints (and more.) Nora Kirkpatrick, ES&TMZ's accordion player, turns out to be a bit more...shall we say... free-wheeling: "In college, my roommates and I, yet unwise to the immense value and pleasure of vinyl, would use our [...]

It's year-end best-ofs time, and there are hundreds of lists (themselves listed at Largehearted Boy ) out there for the mining. This year's themes seems to be: working hard to convince yourself there are better albums than Merriweather Post Pavilion , just so you don't appear to be following the crowd taking the Decemberists and Andrew Bird for granted either pretending you discovered The xx or saying you still love them despite their ubiquity and popularity (their debut album is two months old) You can always [...]
DOWNLOAD: Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros - "40 Day Dream" (Live on Daytrotter) DOWNLOAD: Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros - "Home" (from the Vagrant CD Up From Below ) Former Ima Robert vocalist Alex Ebert has been getting quite a buzz with his new freak-folk project Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. The band formed in 2007 and released their debut CD, Up From Below (Vagrant Records), earlier this summer. At the album release party this past July, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros [...]
The Most People You'll Ever See on One Stage Yes, we noticed the resemblance too. The lead singer of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes , Alex Ebert looks a lot like a 60's cult leader especially with the ten plus other members of the group following his lead. Alex even describes Edward Sharpe as, " A messianic figure, sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind…but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love." The track "Home" is by far my favorite track featured on their first full [...]
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - "Home" (Live @ KCRW) Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - "Home" (Live @ Letterman) For my money Ed Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes should win awards for 2009's best use of trumpet, most infectious happiness and zeroed in adorableness. The latter exemplified by the pixie-haired Jade. The word cute was invented for her. Here's the band showing off their boundless energy on the Johnny Cash [...]

This song looks like a lot of fun.
Question: Do former members of completely abject bands deserve another shot? Alex Ebert, the primary hippie in the love fest shown above, was formerly the frontman for Ima Robot. In case you don... Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are a strange, strange, looking group. At times E.S. looks like a longer haired version of Aldous Snow (the rock star character from Forgetting Sarah Marshall ) and at other times he looks like a member of the McPoyle family ( It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia ), so, not a group that is going to be appearing any CK ads anytime soon. But, we all know that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, and so even if you don't want to invite E.S. and the M.Z.s out with [...]
This past Monday (October 19th) we were watching and enjoying another great episode of this 3rd season of Gossip Girl . Towards the end of this episode when the producers felt we had enough story for next week and giving us tide us over till next week we heard a the sweet sound of some whistling followed by a man and woman with a little bit of drawl singing these lyrics "Home, Let me come Home, Home is Whenever I'm with you..." The lyrics and melody sounded so quite familiar we could not quite place it. We [...]

Stop what you're doing. The award for the most joyous album of the month goes to this 11-piece barefooted hippie-folk outfit from LA. Up from Below is a classic analogue-sounding album which sounds like it was recorded somewhere in the 60s by a cohort of close-knit kindred spirits intent on bringing some love to the world. It's got that mystic, feel-good singalong vibe and an undeniable link to the counter-culture of the past. The band even tour in a big yellow school bus for jaysus sake. [...]

I will admit, the first few emails I got from Vagrant about Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros went by unread. I had seen the name too many places to think I would have anything unique to say about the band and the description of a 60's psychedelic troop that plays huge anthems that drove around in a bus with their name scrawled on the side seemed a bit too much. The thing is... Edward Sharpe (aka Alex Ebert ) and his Magnetic Zeroes do a pretty stellar job of channeling the communal sounds from [...]
