by BrooklynVegan Mike The 2007 Canadian Polaris Music Prize winner will be announced on September 24, 2007. Canadian resident BrooklynVegan Mike discusses the nominees, and who he thinks might walk away with the monetary prize. Note: He wrote this a few weeks ago - it's all still perfectly relevant, but worth keeping in mind...... The Polaris Music Prize is nigh. In its second year the judges have the task of not only picking a winner from a competitive field [...]

Canada Day is Sunday, and so in honor, all of our selections today come from the Great White North. Lay back and think of snow. Young Galaxy "Young Galaxy" I was initially excited by this album, but it really failed to keep my interest. Airy pop with a slighly Euro flavor. Memphis "A Little Place in the Wilderness" Wilderness indeed. The album opens (and closes) with the sound of crickets chirping and builds up to some staid indie pop. It's mellow and melodic, and actually [...]
Normally when I hear the term, "juno-nominated" I assume someone is going to force Nickleback, Celine, or the sexed up bird Nelly into my grill. That's part of the reason I dismissed Patrick Watson . All I knew about him was he was getting some radio love and from Montreal. After digesting the record – Close to Paradise – all I can say is that it is about time the Canadian music committee (whatever it is called) finally recognizing the talent our indie scene is putting out. Patrick's music however, is difficult to describe. [...]
Some really big shows coming to the Windsor area in the next month. The first one is this Thursday as recent Juno nominee (for best newcomer) Patrick Watson headlines a show at Phog . I played a song on my radio show this week and really liked it. Some pretty sweet pop music. Really wish I could check out his show but unfortunately I'll be working but if you're in the area you should definitely check it out. Thanks to his publicity people here are a couple of songs to [...]
Αν βρισκόταν κάποιος με ικανή φωνή, που να 'μιμούνταν' πχ τον Billy Mackenzie τότε fine by me. Ο Καναδός (I know, I know..) Patrick Watson λοιπόν, έχει τόσο υπέροχη φωνή και ο δίσκος του [...]
December 14 marks two momentous occasions in Ottawa. First, it is the day I will complete my final (and only) exam for the first academic term. Second, and some would argue more importantly, Patrick Watson will play a show at Zaphod Beeblebrox. The occasion is made more momentous because Mocking Music favourite, and one-time contributor , Stephen St. Pierre , will open for Watson. What makes this Watson character so great? Well, to put it simply, he makes really good music. His album Close To Paradise , [...]
Each weekday, My Morning Download introduces you to some of the coolest new music on the web. We clear through the noise so you don't have to. Meet Patrick Watson Patrick Watson was born in California in 1979 but was raised in Quebec and has been based in Montreal since a teenager. Watson may remind you of Jeff Buckley, Kate Bush, a young Peter Gabriel with some of the dramatic flair of Coldplay.

(Editor's note: Besides Sweden (which I've already got covered) Canada seems to have the most consistently great and interesting music scene. Last week I wrote about new music from Ox and Bob Wiseman and now it seems I've got at least 5 more posts featuring new music from Canadian artists. Hope you enjoy.) It's intimidating to followup a post by Said The Gramophone with my shoddy attempt at writing prose. But for Patrick Watson I'll give it a try. From StG: Patrick Watson is someone surrounded by, immersed [...]
