while spending the summer in kansas city, i discovered and fell in love with local band, the republic tigers. they've recently been publicized by being featured on the tv show gossip girl, but don't judge! check out their current album keep color , and especially tracks 'buildings and mountains' and 'the nerve.' and here's the video for 'buildings and mountains.'

Last week's prediction : bald dude, lots of anguish . Never had the impression that the iTunes free Single of the Week was the equivalent of those bargain cassette bins that used to lurk in the front of record stores, pawning off Filter overstock onto unsuspecting mall-goers, but what other explanation is there for posting a song that's a full two years old? "Of course this is free now!," says iTunes commenter sir benjamin, the music review guy: "I already bought it." Of course, nothing ever dies in licensing world, which is the [...]
When most bands tell you they’ve had to “grow up in public,” they’re talking about getting pushed into the spotlight before they’ve had a chance to find their voice. But for Whittier, California, trio The Dares, who started playing when twin brothers and co-founders Ben (guitar/lead vocals) and Matt (drums/vocals) Peterson were all of 8 years old, the idea was a bit more literal. These boys-to-men literally grew up in public, forming a band when their peers were still dabbling in youth-league sports and landing a major-label contract with Jive Records before they’d even finished high school. Today, as the [...]
Kansas City based group, The Republic Tigers , got their name from a mixture of a former band name, "Golden Republic" and a certain animal mascot from one of the band member's alma matters - two things that were apparently from significant periods in their lives. The quintet officially formed in 2005 and were the first 2007 signings to an imprint called Chop Shop Records based out of Pasadena, CA, a label with roots in music supervision (e.g. The OC, Grey's Anatomy). "Buildings & Mountains" is from The Republic Tigers 2008 debut full length called "Keep [...]
Rebecca has been listening to these tracks on repeat, so I felt obliged to post them here. But first, I have to say, I experience a serious cognitive hiccup everytime I try to recall this band's name. Republic of Tigers. The Tiger Republic . Hell, even Republic Tiger . But no. It's the The Republic Tigers. GAWD. Did they have to do that? As for the music, this is straight up Rebecca's alley. Melodic. Expansive. (One reviewer rightly calls the sound "epic yet intimate.") And all with an underlying 80's synthpop sensibility. (For [...]
The Republic Tigers, Iron Horse, NoHo, MA I've just finished my last semester of college and moved back home, so you know what that means - I have a degree and I'm unemployed! Which, obviously, means time for updating and posting about all the stuff I meant to post about three months ago. Aren't you all excited?! Of course you are. Don't give me that. Continuing : I sort of squeed on for a bit about how happy I was that Tally Hall was on tour again and how they'd rereleased their record [...]
The Republic Tigers - Buildings & Mountains Hot off the release of their debut album, Keep Color , The Republic Tigers are showing no signs of slowing down as they embark once again on tour to meet up with Nada Surf at the end of the month. You've already heard their melodies soundtracking shows like Grey's Anatomy and Gossip Girl , and on Thursday night, they'll continue to take over TV sets by making their late night television debut on the Late Show with David Letterman [...]
Chamber pop anthems with balls
The Republic Tigers are a rock band from Kansas City, Missouri and were created by Kenn Jankowski and Adam McGill. They recently dropped by KCRWs Morning Becomes Eclectic to play songs from their new album, Keep Color, which was released this month. It's a nice assortment of sophisticated and melodic pop. Enjoy.
Here's the pretty fancy video that goes with The Republic Tiger's fantastic track Buildings and Mountains . Very Noah's ark inspired!
The first band that I ever saw at my beloved troubadour was the Golden Republic , who were opening for Sondre Lerche and acting as his backing band. I was young and naïve way back in 2004, and they rocked the joint so hard that I was convinced the tiny, ancient building was going to collapse around me, and I didn't mind at all. Shortly after playing the Troub, the Golden Republic released a stellar self-titled debut, did a small tour to support it, and unceremoniously broke up. It hurt my soul a little bit. But! Keyboardist/guitarist [...]
First single from Keep Color ... See more MJTV video Listen to Musical Justice
The Republic Tigers are a rock band formed in Kansas City, Missouri by Kenn Jankowski and Adam McGill. They released their new album No Color and it haves good response from the audience so far. This is what customers are saying: "Wow take everything you love about innovative music of the "now" and combine it with everything you love about music of the "then" and you have Keep Color by The Republic Tigers". -Chadwick-R "A great CD full of interesting sounds, not just your average indie stuff, but something really [...]
The Republic Tigers are releasing their new album Keep Color today on Chop Shop Records. The video for the song "Buildings & Mountains" is available on iTunes , but frankly, I'm not quite sure what the appeal would be. Seems like a whole lot of artistic shots leading to a pointless storyline. The song is hypnotically cool, though, so I'll give 'em points for that. (more...)

I'm about to the point where if I listen to this song one more time my head's going to fall off, but seriously -- good for the Tigers. This is some top-dollar work, probably not seen since, well, the Golden Republic was on Astralwerks and had this one done. "Buildings & Mountains" Summary: Tigers singer Kenn Jankowski drags a boat down the sidewalk of some Southwestern town. He passes band members along the way [...]
