Who doesn't love a music festival, right? It's all the best parts of a concert–music, friends, alcohol and drugs…just lots and lots more of them! Each year, more and more of them are popping up all over the place. Whether or not you already know, Fun Fun Fun will be launching it's 6th annual event, one of the most diverse line ups ever! Fun Fun Fun Fest (FFF) is an independent genre based festival, known as one of the most relaxed, creative, and pioneering festivals in music today. FFF is a fest that [...]

Fall is almost upon us, and that means it's Freefest time again, this Saturday (9/10) at Merriweather Post Pavilion . The schedule for Freefest was released earlier this week, and we've since been plotting, plotting, plotting away, trying to decide which fantastic band would have to be subjugated for yet another fantastic band. I might get to see only fifteen minutes of !!! (Chk Chk Chk) after Cut Copy , but dammit, fifteen minutes is better than nothing, and I must hear "Must Be the Moon" live, just once. [...]

This one is a quiet stunner, a grower, an album that seems good at first but turns great over time as the melodies stick and churn in your head. By turns rollicking ("Unless It's Kicks," "You Can't Hold the Hand of a Rock and Roll Man") and heart-stoppingly lovely ("Savannah Smiles," "A Girl in Port"), The Stage Names is the work of a band that understands dynamics, the tension created by moving from a whisper to a scream. There is real power in a quiet moment, and this album is full of them. And as [...]

Oh, indie rock. Not only filled with so many talented musicians but also wrought with so me of the prettiest guys I've ever seen. Alot of men are good looking but it's something else to be pretty. A pretty guy, to me, is the entire package - Incredibly good looking, talented, smart and charismatic, it takes alot to be pretty. It's been my long standing opinion that Will Sheff is the prettiest man in indie rock and after my last post, a round up of recent indie rock news items that culminated with Will [...]
Wednesday, August 13, 2008 As usual, I want to recommend a little something before I get to the focus of my love today. So, if you're in Austin then I invite you to come down to Central Market for the 101X Summer Movie Series. We'll (I say we because I work in the building) will be showing Ferris Bueller's Day Off for FREE! That's good stuff. Plus, it's outside and there's a lot of Blue Moon around. Alright, Pitchfork [...]
Here's what I'm looking forward to seeing this year at Lollapalooza. Besides the headliners, that is. Broken Social Scene: Love and Rockets: Kid Sister: Foals: Battles: CSS: Cat Power: The National: Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings: Okkervil River: -- Annie Zaleski
My sources tell me this show is confirmed. No further details available yet. And yes, Neko Case is singing with the NPs. New Pornographers, "Letter from an Occupant": Okkervil River, "Our Life Is Not a Movie or Maybe" -- Annie Zaleski
Okkervil River - "The Stage Names" [...]
Greg Wind and I each picked a video of the week, one that not only represents the listening sensibilities of our site and staff, but also that appeal to a wider audience of potential fans. Unbeknownst to one another, we both picked tracks that have ...
Okkervil River - The Stage Names ( Jagjaguwar ) A shining example of a band that has set out with the honorable intention of making a defining album.
I can't wait. The last time I saw them I hadn't let their stuff soak in yet. They were good, but as much as I went on to love that album , it was so melodramatic that I don't think it let them kick out the jams the way I'm expecting the new songs will. The video for "Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe" is really cool on a number of levels. I like the dichotomy between the set of the shoot and watching and how they are uncomfortably squeezed the [...]
We all want our lives to be like the movies. Overcome some terrible trials with a John Wayne swagger and a wry Bogart grin, kiss Lauren Bacall, and live happily ever after - or at least die a hero's death trying. Reality is a much more tedious exercise in banality and frustration, which is why we're so fascinated with films in the first place. On their fourth full-length, Okkervil River explores the disappointment with a life unglamorous in what is perhaps the best-written album of the year. From the opening track 'Our Life Is Not a Movie or [...]

A wave of acclaim has spread over the internet, all seemingly pointing fingers at Okkervil River's latest The Stage Names , calling it one of the asbolute best releases of the year. Pitchfork 's Stephen Deusner concluded, "These songs are so good and so moving that they only give us stupid, stubborn hope," giving the album a score of 8.7/10. Further suggestion of awesomeness: Metacritic gives the album a user ranking of 8.9/10...not too shabby. That being said, a strange relationship arose when listening the the band that was later suggested by Deusner [...]

Released earlier this month, Okkervil River's The Stage Names has already garnered an impressive amount of critical attention; on National Public Radio's "All Songs Considered," producer Robin Hilton called the record "one of the most anticipated albums of the year" and concluded, "it's the band's best album yet." Pitchfork's Stephen Deusner went further and called it "without doubt one of the year's best." "Over the course of nine tracks that play like an indie-noir updating of "The Day of the Locust", [Will] Sheff creates cinematic miniworlds populated by tragically faded actresses [and] liquored-up barflies," raved Mike Usinger in [...]
