Being a misfit within the misfits, Owl Mag writer, Bernadette Harris, wriggled between '90s country and classic rock.
1) Hum - Stars she thinks she missed [...]
This past weekend, the always quality pop culture arm of the immensely popular Onion , The A.V. Club brought their expertise into the real world with the first annual A.V. Fest in Chicago, Ill. Hosted by the legendary Hideout, A.V. Fest was a time of hearty pop culture reflection, with a smattering of under-the-radar or nearly forgotten acts. Not to take away, most every band on the bill was necessary, and gave further insight into The A.V. Club and what the editors value as far as art is concerned. [...]
Between Pavement, Guided By Voices, Soundgarden, and A Perfect Circle, it seemed like any and every band not named The Smiths reunited in 2010. That trend has continued into 2011 with the return of Pulp, Bad Meets Evil, and Death From Above 1979. Now, three more seminal rock outfits have announced their own respective resurrections. Let's start with San Diego-based post-hardcore outfit Hot Snakes . Led by Rick Froberg and John Reis, the band broke up in 2005, with its members going on to form Obits and The Night Marchers. However, after the original lineup reunited during [...]
I think we've made enough jokes about the many broken-up bands of yesteryear reuniting just in time to grab their last bit of pre-global-crash money for you to anticipate the punchline even before I get to the end of this sentence. News on reunion shows by Hum and Letters to Cleo, as well as some dudes hoping against hope that this year's Coachella will bring Athens' finest out into the desert heat, after the jump. • Midwestern guitar-rock stalwarts Hum [...]
I'm on my way to Sweet Home Chicago for a weekend of Michigan football and meaningless Tigers baseball, so in honor of the state of Illinois, here's a underrated 1990s classic from one of Champbana's own, Hum.
So, our week of Chicago music is coming to a close. It's been fun getting to know some of the best bands to come out of the Windy City. This week, we're taking a break from Friday F**k Music to flesh out our week of Chicago music. I've saved one of my all time favorite's for last. This song is still the jam. For serious. She thinks she missed the train to Mars
Champaign, Illinois space rockers, Hum, crafted a brief yet influential career in the 90's by creating these dense space rock anthems. While they never really broke big during their careeer, they did manage to score one minor alternative rock hit with the single "Stars" from the album You'd Prefer An Astronaut. Since 1995, I've never really stopped listening to Hum. It's one of those cds I still rock out every month or so. The entire cd, You'd Prefer an Astronaut, is still solid. You can take any track off that disc and it would [...]
