Happy New Year, PCHA-ers! It's time once again to present my annual mix modeled after the abysmal Now That’s What I Call Music series. As always, this mix is not intended to be a pure rundown of the best songs ... Continue reading

It's July. So that means that we have less than a month before one of the biggest lineups the country has ever seen hits Byron Bay for this year's Splendour In The Grass installment. But before we paint our dad's van, buy one of those inflatable palm trees and spend $300 on goon bags and orange juice in anticipation for the festival - we decided to take one last look at the bill. And whilst we already knew that the massive headliners, such as Bloc Party, Jack White and [...]

In case you haven’t been paying attention to your calendar lately, 2012 is halfway over. Here at Mostlyjunkfood.com, besides blowing our New Year’s resolutions two months into the year and consuming mall Japanese food every day on our lunch break , we’ve been paying close attention to the quality of music that’s been released during the first six months of the year. After looking over our gradebooks, we decided to put together a list of some of the standout bodies of work, songs, artists, videos and moments from the first semester of the year. We also took [...]

I decided to give a shout out to my favorite person from New Mexico, my dear friend Nathan Hollis , by promoting the new album from my favorite band from New Mexico. Back in March, The Shins released what is probably my favorite album of the year so far with their 4th full-length album, Port Of Morrow . The Shins have yet to disappoint. Mercer delivers yet another musical and lyrical masterpiece. It's a solid album, through and through, and some the best pop music I've heard all year. My current favorite [...]

With the impending change of seasons looming in the air, it’s hard not to think about the summer months that will soon be upon us. With summer comes warmer weather, and, of course, an all-new array of artists and bands making their way to Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md. Kicking off the Merriweather summer concert series is the third annual Sweetlife Food and Music Festival , taking place this Saturday, April 28th. [...]

Countdown We dropped the ball on the top 5 videos of the month for February, so today we're making up for it with a double entry. The best videos of the last two months run the gamut from old school to groundbreaking. Many of our most-featured artists are included, as are a handful of obscure upstarts. Sit back and enjoy the show. 10. Mouse on Mars - "Polaroyced" Concept: Guy in mask dances. French bulldogs fly. Glitter falls from sky. [...]

Today, we are going to flood the market with contests. That's right, we are giving it away faster than Tiffany Amber Thiessen on 90210. Do people that read blogs even get that reference? Wait. There's a new 90210? What the shit? Anyway. I've had a long lasting love affair with The Shins , dating back to "New Slang" sound tracking one of my all-time favorite films . I didn't connect to the last LP like I did with Chutes Too Narrow and Oh, Inverted World , but "Simple Song", [...]

On Thursday, I enter the last year of my twenties, and it seems only fitting that a new Shins album should come out during my birthday week, to make me realize how depressingly old I really am.Watchin

The long-awaited album by The Shins , their first in five years, tops this week's list of new releases. James Mercer has rebooted his project with a new band and heightened production, thanks to Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, Kylie Minogue, The Flaming Lips, etc.) and contributions from Richard Swift and Deep Sea Diver's Jessica Dobson, among others. Port of Morrow also deals with some weightier topics, like religious violence and mortality, but even with that and its more richly textured sound, the album is unmistakably "The Shins" and features Mercer's clever turns of phrase and captivating voice.
