This week's music video playback is probably the most influential song in DJ history. It is the first song featuring turntables and scratching. Grandmaster DST (DXT??) on the wheels gave many future DJ heroes like Qbert, Mixmaster Mike, Roc Raida and others their first taste of that ffff ffff fresh, fff fffrr fffrrr ffr fressssssssssh! Not to mention that this video has some weird shizz, along the same lines as Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer.
Pitch contributor Saby Reyes-Kulkarni recently conducted a monster-length interview with producer Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Swans, John Zorn, Herbie Hancock and many, many more), who appears tonight a... Continue reading "Q&A: Interview with Martin Bisi" >

Don't have much time to spend on this, what with the three L's to get to ( Lost , Life and Life on Mars ) but it's always a treat to hear Herbie Hancock's hands on the ivory. And while there was less story telling (this is jazz so the songs are looooong!) the content more than made up for it. Miles on the phone, Mongo on the congas, and Herbie's confessed ignorance of music videos ("Rockit") were well worth making my night of tv watching that much longer. [...]
Welcome back to The Five Spot, another new Rocks Off recurrent. Every Friday (but sometimes Monday), we'll examine a recent bit of music news and list five reasons why it's either brilliant or dumb-as... Continue reading "Five Spot: Prince Drives Us to Distraction " >

Last night's broadcast of the 50th Annual Grammy Awards was a doozy, well, sort of. Unfortunately, we missed the first fifteen minutes, causing us to tune in right when Morris Day and The Time took the stage. Flashbacks to Purple Rain and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back suddenly began to almost overpower our ability to focus on their performance of "Jungle Love." Ah shit, then who joins the stage with The Time? The Grammy duel performance formula that reappeared far too many times throws Rihanna on stage to perform her "Umbrella," which then reverts back [...]
Well, I'll give it to the Grammys: At least they're consistent in being wholly, utterly out-of-touch. In the stunner of the year, Herbie Hancock , a pianist/composer who, to be fair, is an incredibly well-regarded and influential jazz musician (though most people probably know his name because of Tommy Boy ) and scored a video hit in MTV's early years with the song "Rockit" (see it at the top of this post), won album of the year at the 2008 Grammys over the likes of Kanye West, Amy Winehouse and Foo Fighters, just to name a few. The [...]
We certainly need a good weekend of things to do that don't involve being engulfed in flames and covered in soot and ash, yes? There's a bunch of Halloween shows this weekend but don't let getting dressed up in Jack Sparrow attire hold you back from checking out some bands. Monsters Are Waiting plays a show after a few months not playing a show at Club Underground with War Tapes. Funeral Party,
Ever since Asimov came out with the idea of a machine that can think and feel, humans were fascinated by the idea. You can find robots in horror films, being a menace to society, in sci-fi books, trying to be friendly, and in my back yard, just chillin'. Yep. Robots are everywhere around. When robots invaded our music, we said: that's enough! But it was too late. I would like to share this convicting evidence. Watch and learn- this is the evolution of the man – machine, the android, the robot! Learn the specifications – you'll [...]
