The Octopus Project is a personal favorite of mine. Their album Hello, Avalanche , is one of the most consistently fun and addictive albums I've ever heard. Their sound is a mixture of analog and electronic instrumentation, with an extremely solid rhythm section that faithfully drives every song. from [...]
Us Audio Muffiners have been keeping busy lately working on some new projects that we are very exicted about and have been somewhat neglectful to our followers. I wanted to assure you all that the rumors are not true, we did not sell out to MTV.com as some of you ...
So I guess not all of us are lucky enough to go to Tom Petty. Pity. Luckily, there's lots of other cool shows tonight - in fact, this may be the best night of live music in Houston all summer. We'll start with a double-shot of Rock the Bayou bands... Ratt, "Round and Round" Skid Row, "Slave to the Grind" Octopus Project, Indian Jewelry, Flamin' Hellcats, Toadies and more after this. [...]
In the above video for "Truck," from 2007's Hello, Avalanche , The Octopus Project took a trip to the airshow. There, they chow on a corn dog, gawk at the locals, and look to the sky (a lot), all which would be pretty unwatchable if it wasn't for the budget graphics added in post production. It's a cute video, one that is fitting for the spazzy instrumental panic of the Austin quartet. Plus, it sure beats the video with the gerbil in it . Or is that a hamster? I assume it's a [...]
OCTOPUS PROJECT TO LAUNCH NATIONWIDE TOUR Our favorite local instrumental-noodlers the Octopus Project are set to launch their nationwide tour starting with Lollapalooza in just a few days. We're of course stoked to see one of our favorite local acts cause such a stir outside of Austin, so in support here's there video for "Truck" which is garnering some attention over at YouTube. Go Octopus Project and see you when you get back in time for the ACL Festival ! ****************************** ****************************** ******** FLEETING JOYS [...]
A rollicking song now gets a fun music video to go with it: The Octopus Project - Truck [download or die!] Buy Hello, Avalanche from Insound The Octopus Project's Website
One of the more surprising albums and bands I've come across this year, is The Octopus Project and their album Hello, Avalanche released by Peek-a-Boo Records. They're a band of four from Austin, Texas and play rather, manic noisy electronic pop and rock in a sonic field of bliss. Entirely of instrumentals apart from the last track Queen , it kind of pin points the message of the songs without having any lyrical content, other than interpretation provided by the title of the track and its instrumentation and tempo. Co-produced by Ryan Hadlock, whose worked [...]
Here in lovely, albeit misguided, America we are upon the Thanksgiving holiday. Though it may signal greed and gluttony to many it is also a time to be thankful and I am thankful that I have this little slice of the internet that I happen to have loyal readers--Jeff and I are both grateful. To thank you all for your patronage, we will be taking the rest of the week off to celebrate our nation's excesses. You won't find me trolling malls on Black Friday gorging myself on useless consumerism but you will find me in the kitchen [...]
Noise/Avant gathering extraordinaire No Fun Fest has been spreading rumors of its its lineup. While they refuse to give away all their acts, a large list has magically appeared on the fest's website . If you're too lazy to click a link or would rather just give EVP the time of day, here's a list of confirmed acts [so far]: ASTRO (Hiroshi Hasegawa) Tony Conrad + M.V. Carbon The Haters Consumer Electronics Demons Religious Knives Sudden Infant Burning Star Core Nevari Butchers Carlos Giffoni The Skaters Werewolf Jerusalem Thurston Moore + Nancy Garcia Illusion of Safety Dinosaurs [...]
As I sit here and listen to what will likely be participants in the last batch of 2007-released reviews, it occurs to me that perhaps it's time to give a bit more--the holidays are upon us after all. Enjoy these treats as EVP forgets it's not a mp3 blog once more for your benefit: Murder Mystery "Love Astronaut" "Honey Come Home" Zookeeper "Snow in Berlin" "Trumpets" [...]
Unless I'm behind on slang I doubt truck is the new term for Air Show crashes, but if it isn't please allow The Octopus Project to make it so. The band's fly-by-night video for "Truck" is a masterful mash-up of childish drawings and spectacular crashes captured by amateur cinematographers posing as Air Show enthusiasts. I can't imagine people clamoring for aerial displays of our military superiority without the hope that at least one bail out or one crash occurs. It's that feeling that racing fans have--you may enjoy the racing and the speed but a race just isn't a race [...]
Sun City Girls - Piasa...Devourer of Men Sun City Girls - Dulce ( Abduction ) Two lost SCG treasures are reissued by the band's homegrown label to much fanfare... ...though to be fair, much fanfare in terms of SCG isn't near as much as it should be. SCG and their various side projects (and personalities) are a national treasure; much more important than most monuments erected to honor ex-Presidents, fake gods, and capital venture. Consider this the first shot at raising funds to build some golden, glorious, phallic [...]
I'm certain there's more than a few folks reading this site that happen to be in bands around or near the Louisville area. Would you like to be heard? Would you like to freak out a few Midwesterners in need of a good freakout? Perhaps you want to meet a bigger band and become friends so you can weasel your way into cushy opening slots? Then read on brothers and sisters. read on: Forecastle Festival 2008 Opens for Business: Submissions Sought for Music, Art, Film; Sponsorships Still Available The 7th annual Forecastle Festival in [...]
Somewhere in the vast, barren wasteland between freak folkers, jam enthusiasts, jazz giants, and new wave marauders we find Bad Drumlin Grass. With more synth jams than Space Invaders, the do-it-all duo fluctuate between avant and pop with the greatest of ease; track after track, song after song. Invigorating Scent Of... , Bad Drumlin Grass' lastest release, finds the boys forsaking their ambient-teasing CDR days for a trip into improvisational sound. The result is a rich mixture of funky bass lines, trippy guitars, and electronic bursts brewing within music's mucky crucible. Jam band has morphed [...]
Castanets - In the Vines ( Asthmatic Kitty ) In The Vines finds Castanets mastermind Ray Raposa slipping further into folk's dark recesses. In the Vines is a stark, but lonely look into the underbelly of music history's most reliable muse. Folk has worn many hats but rarely has it donned the one Raposa has slapped upon its weary cranium--call it freak, psych, or drone and you'd still be hard-pressed to find an apt label for the latest Castanets menagerie. Raposa's third album under the Castanets [...]
First it was rushing out the original 30 GB models with plenty of glitches, software that wasn't compatible, and sync ups that didn't recognize Zunes being plugged in; now with the new generation of Zunes being released and the upgrades promised to those with the original Zune, those same consumers are being stuck with more glitches, bad downloads, bountiful error messages and system crashes. EVP doesn't speak as a third party to these situations--they were experienced firsthand last year when we were sent a Zune to test and review (which happened for another publication...*GASP*). The software refused [...]
EVP has eagerly anticipated news of the forthcoming Radar Bros. album. One cannot live on And the Surrounding Mountains , The Fallen Leaf Pages , and the self-titled alone. Thankfully we have the impending glee of Auditorium to quell our aching. Many look longingly to more prominent release from more prominent artists but no one gets Justin as excited as the Radar Bros. Merge Records will be releasing the new Radar Bros. album Auditorium throughout North America on January 29, 2008. Auditorium was recorded by the band in Jim Putnam's home [...]
Major Stars - Mirror/Messenger ( Drag City ) Major Stars may not have their fingers on indie's pulse but they couldn't give a fuck--the sextet's Drag City debut may be far from the kingdom of Sufjan, Colin, and Isaac but Mirror/Messenger hearkens back to the abrupt end of alternative rock. In the blink of an eye, the waves were transformed into bubblegum and nu-metal, leaving little room for bar bands and grungy rockers to be heard. Mirror/Messenger picks up where mid-90s stalwarts left off, combining [...]
