Japandroids , the high energy rock duo out of Vancouver, is returning to Louisville for a show at Headliners on June 15th. No word yet on ticket prices or openers, but go ahead an put this one on your calendar. The last time they played here was 2010, and they literally shook the floor at Zanzabar with their speakers stacked to the ceiling. We've reviewed that show (with The Walkmen and Arms) here . They also played one of our favorite sets at Bonnaroo the same year. With the 2012 release of Celebration Rock (see [...]
Canadian noisy duo Japandroids are to support The Gaslight Anthem on their upcoming UK/EU tour. The band consist of Brian King (vocals, guitar) and David Prowse (drums, vocals) and have been compared to the likes of Sonic Youth and The White Stripes , blending garage, punk and indie rock. Their highly acclaimed album, Celebration Rock was released in June 2012. WATCH // Japandroids - The House That Built Heaven [...]
Cheech & Chong. Starsky & Hutch. Sonny & Cher. All reputable duos, however some would say that they do not compare to the likes of Japandroids. Hailing from Canada and forming in 2006, the two-man team gained notability upon the release of their debut album, Post-Nothing, which garnered a lot of attention from critics. Their acclaimed albums and intensely energetic live performances are what land these guys on such festival line-ups as St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival. Speaking of which, Japandroids will be gracing us with their presence on the 3rd of February to bring Australia what it needs. [...]

After their success in Europe and America, the Canadian rock band Japandroids is taking the world by storm, and this time they’re going far East. Here’s a little chat with David Prowse of the duo before embarking on their scheduled 2013 Asia tour, which will include the Laneway Festival in Singapore. + On December last year, Spin Magazine named Japandroids as Band of The Year 2012, how do you feel about that? - Well um, obviously it's really flattering whenever you get praised like that by anyone, but I don't really read a [...]

Leah's Top 10 Albums of 2012 1. Murder By Death – Bitter Drink, Bitter Moon Among the many reasons I love Murder By Death is their ability to seamlessly weave indie/folk/Americana/punk/orch estra into one coherent genre. I’ve been a fan of theirs for a long time and it seems that with each album they bring forward a new facet of their “IFAPO” style. Bitter Drink, Bitter Moon is filled with a [...]
Returning after their 2009 make-or-break album 'Post-Nothing' there was always danger that, stripped of their initial survival impulse, the energy of Japandroids would somehow be diluted. There was really no need to worry; 'Celebration Rock' takes the groundwork previously set by the Vancouver duo and blows it into the sky in an explosion of energy [...]

Well we made it through the year, through another apocalypse, through another mud-slinging election and we are safely landing in the warm bosom of 2013, emerging anew. I'm not going to pretend I listened to everyone's favorite album this year, but after some reflection, 2012 was a pretty-fucking-good year. There was hardly a game-changer in the bunch with perhaps the exception of one rap wunderkind from Compton, but that doesn't make it my favorite record of the year. My list is dominated by guitar, call me old-fashioned, call me predictable (I might be)-I still find that the ancient [...]

As usual, I'm going to sum up the year with a non-definitive playlist of some of my favourite songs from 2012. These are roughly in chronological order according to when I first fell in love with them. Hmm, I certainly listened to a lot of guitar music, didn't I? I contributed to year-end retrospectives from the Georgia Straight , Exclaim! , BeatRoute and The Tyee , so follow those links for more formal lists and explanations. [...]

It's that time of year again. The holidays are upon us, December is flying by, it's getting colder (in theory- Nashville did not so much get the memo on that one), and the music industry is mostly on an extended vacation. Record releases have basically come to a halt, tours are winding down, awards season is preparing to gear up, and basically every single magazine and website that writes about music is releasing a year-end list in some form or another. We at No Country are preparing our own year-end lists for release very soon, but in the time being [...]
This year saw a number of interesting developments in the indie rock world, all reflective of the genre's ever-expanding palate. Ah, the holiday season, the chilly time (in the northern climes, anyway) when we critics dollop a smidge of eggnog into our pints of bourbon, take a break from mailing boxes of coal to Mumford & Sons, and inundate you readers with list after list after list of our Favorites, Most Importants, and Absolutely the Bests of the year. I know as well as you do the potential for this curatorial spirit to reach maximum...
