Utterly awful band name but that hasn't deterred ubercool label 4AD from climbing aboard. And their confidence in this LA act is well founded given the strength of tracks like 'Only In My Dreams' from new album 'Mature Themes'. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti is known for the quirky, but 'Only In My Dreams' is a lovely tune of a song. The recording lacks none of the psychedelia inherent in most of the Ariel-led collective's previous offerings, but it is probably one of the more palatable singles they've produced thus far. I've always been fascinated by the idea of outsider art, but I find most of it too unpalatable to actually listen to. The new Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti album, Mature Themes , is kooky enough to appeal to my only-in-theory love of outsider art, but it's not so far off the deep end that I can't genuinely enjoy it as well. I wrote about Mature Themes for The Tyee . The video for the album standout "Only in My Dreams" is below. What a heartthrob.
