Happy 10th anniversary to Rock the Bells , who have announced their rotating 2013 lineup featuring hosts Peter Rosenberg & MURS 3:16 , as well as names like Bone Thugs N Harmony , Danny Brown , Black Hippy (who just played NYC ), Common , E40 & Too Short , Earl Sweatshirt ( ditto ), Flatbush Zombies , Juicy J (who played a Fader show on Monday and Irving Plaza last night), Rakim , Wu-Tang Clan (who play [...]

“I’m the incredible, gargantuo/Crack competition like pistachios/I got in on lock, can’t crack the code/Streets know I’m hot, you catch a cold” Jay Rock is a member of hip hop supergroup Black Hippy (fellow members include Kendrick Lamar , Schoolboy Q , and Ab-Soul ) from Los Angeles. His style isn’t necessarily as distinctive as the fellow members of his crew, but it’s certainly as hard-hitting. His gritty new set of visuals, the video for coke anthem “Yola” released for TDE appreciation week, pushes his lyrics to the next [...]

Following Jay Rock home may not be a good idea if the idea of a thug's life frightenens you. If you're scared of the otherside of the track, the fabulous life of money, hoes and crimson clothes await you. Ever seen a snapper that comes back to you no matter which way you throw it out? What about a click of homies that can actually rap and keep the gat on them at all times? APLUSFILMZ has and they have the drop on the life and times of Jay Rock, who's promoting [...]

Jay Rock - Follow Me Home Strange Music: 2011 West Coast hip-hop has long been defined by the Los Angeles aesthetic: lowriders, gangbanging, and a finely-creased Ben Davis khaki ensemble topped off with a fresh pair of Cortezes. Anointed as part of the New West movement that pledged to keep that image and old Dr. Dre sound alive, to mixed results, (Kendrick Lamar is doing it, but where are Nipsey Hussle and Bishop Lamont?) Jay Rock's Follow Me Home is in the vein of a Game album, which [...]
“My teachers used to call my momma on me, now I’m a rap star and I can f**k my momma’s homies.”
The Souls Of Mischief comparison comes up every time Los Angeles' Black Hippy quartet does their Voltron thing, but it warrants repetition. Because this is exactly what West Coast Underground Rap was like in the ... read more
Ignore the minute and a half of nonsensical jabbering that bookends this video. Don't mind the ongoing irritance that is being forced to watch this on YouTube itself. Watch because these guys have a chemistry rarely seen since the days of Pharcyde, Souls of Mischief, Freestyle Fellowship and Tribe. They need to make an album already.

I kinda love it when these 4 team up to become Black Hippy. They make pretty dope shit. Anyway, here's a video for a joint that'll be on Jay Rock's upcoming * Follow Me Home * album called "Say Wassup". Just a fun video with these guys spitting bars; not too different from this one . * Follow Me Home * is scheduled to drop this Tuesday. Hit the jump to check the video. Related: Video! While July 26th the release of Jay Rock's Follow Me Home is right around the corner. He provides us with a visual offering with Ab-Soul, ScHoolBoy Q & Kendrick Lamar aka Black Hippy.
We heard from Jay Rock earlier this week when he released the remix to his latest single, " Hood Gon Love It ," featuring Rick Ross and (why?!) Birdman. And while that track showcased the Los Angeles spitter's high-profile connections, he hasn't forgotten about his partners in Black Hippy. The crew is made up of Rock, Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, and ScHoolBoy Q, who all hail from the L.A. area and have released good-to-great projects this year. That especially goes for Lamar, whose Section.80 album is one of the best efforts I've heard in 2011. But I digress. Here, [...]
