Back in Feburary, the British artist Lightspeed Champion (aka Devonté Hynes) released his second album Life Is Sweet! Nice To Meet You after a two year hiatus and throat surgery. Like his first album, Life Is Sweet! Nice To Meet You is full of catchy melodies and cute lyrics that was woven together with delicately intricate strings -- but without the simplicity and added way too much sophistication. At one time there are moments that are extremly beautiful and others that you really just wanted to flash foward. No denying that Dev have one [...]

Lightspeed Champion Lightspeed Champion is the brain child of Devonté Hynes and has been active since 2005. In 2007, he released Falling off the Lavender Bridge to critical acclaim . This record was recorded and produced in Omaha, Nebraska with the help of Saddle Creek producer Mike Mogis. Mogis is most famous for his work with Connor Oberst and Bright Eyes. Falling off the Lavender Bridge has a star studded guest list, including Nate Walcott, pianist and trumpet player for Bright Eyes and The Faint drummer Clark Baechle. Now, in 2010, Hynes has [...]
Here's a pretty funky groove from a band I rarely listen to: Lightspeed Champion. Maybe I should though after checking out this video for "Marlene." Lots of energy and a rustic, downhome vibe at the same time.
Lightspeed Champion is the alter ego of eclectic indie rocker Devonté Hynes. He opened for Phoenix when I saw them at Webster Hall last June, and the snippets I've been hearing from his recent release have been excellent. The album was inspired by 70's surf, country and classic piano, which is heavily reflected in his cover of Elvis ' Devil in Disguise . I love the melodies emanating from his electric guitar. You must check out this video for Marlene . [...]

Quem está de regresso aos discos é Devonte Hynes, alter-ego Lightspeed Champion, ex-Test Icicles, com o seu novo álbum 'Life Is Sweet! Nice to Meet You'.Fazendo votos que de facto, mesmo em alturas de desemprego e crise estrutural, pelo menos cá por este país, que a vida seja feita efectivamente para ser vivida, este novo álbum vem reforçar uma trajectória há tempos iniciada com 'Falling Off the

Yeah, it's been a while since we Merry Merry Month-ed, but January started of 2010 right with some fantastic releases. The obvious, the one everyone talked about, the one that had people gathered around their website waiting for a hint of what was to come is, of course, Vampire Weekend . Kicking of the new year, Contra didn't quite knock my socks off on the first listen. Sure, "Horchata" was catchy-as-hell, but I wondered if perhaps their sound could really only sustain them for a short time. But it's grown on me over the few weeks and, [...]
For his second album under the Lightspeed Champion moniker, former Test Icicle Devonté Hynes delivers what his label has called an "eclectic grab-bag of influences", further cementing his reputation for idiosyncracy. Those who picked up Hynes' debut Falling Off The Lavender Bridge expecting the jittery dance-punk of Test Icicles found themselves holding an LP of troubadour-style ballads, prompting Pitchfork reviewer Joshua Love to offer, "the way Hynes has transitioned from disco-thrash to roots-pop, I suppose it's possible his next record might be hair metal laced with r&b or punk-rock opera." Had Love suggested "jangly [...]

One of my complete musical loves over the last 2 years has been Dev Hyne's project Lightspeed Champion. I really didn't like Test Icicles, I just don't like that genre, but Lightspeed's debut 'Falling Off The Lavender Bridge' was fantastic. The 9 minutes of 'Midnight Surprise' make it into easily one of the songs of the decade. It wasn't anywhere to be seen on any lists though! The album was full of confusing lyrics, faux American accents and absolutely brilliant song structure. And he's back. The song 'Heavy Purple' had been circulating a while, and to be honest, [...]
