First came the rumors -- she might be back. Then came the 22-word album title ( The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do ). Then came a relatively soon release date (June 19). Then Fiona Apple took Austin's annual SXSW festival by storm. Apple came to fame as the histrionic, anorexic, pretentious ("This world is bullshit," began her VMA acceptance speech...) '90s heir to the thrones of both Tori Amos and Liz Phair. She cut a curious figure in the pop landscape [...]

My good friends and my Union Square apartment aside, I can't say there's much that I miss about living in New York City, particularly in the post 9/11 years. Occasionally, usually while I'm watching a rerun of Sex and the City on TV, I get a little nostalgic for the good old days, circa 1994-95 -- Monday nights at Sugar Babies, Tuesdays at Jackie 60, Wednesdays at Flamingo East, Thursdays at Bowery Bar, Fridays at Sound Factory Bar, Saturdays at the Roxy and Twilo, Sundays hungover in bed with a cheese omelet and fries. But I dry my [...]
I think it safe to say that the extraordinary Fiona Apple is one of the all-time favorite artists of every single writer on the Muruch staff. This is particularly true of our Mid-West reviewer/photographer Jen "Coble" Hopper, who was fortunate enough to attend Fiona Apple's live performance on March 19th at Chicago's Lincoln Hall. You [...]

by Andrew Frisicano Fiona Apple @ Central Presbyterian Church ( via ) So far, Fiona Apple is definitely in the running for most blogged about act at SXSW. She played two shows--at Austin's Stubb's on Wednesday night and Central Presbyterian Church on Thursday night. Of the Stubb's show, the New York Times writes that "the baleful, anxious, doleful, enraged Fiona Apple was back in full force." The Austin shows are the first in a short tour [...]

She's back. We've got tons of artists making a comeback this year, but Fiona Apple is one of the most exciting. She's always maintained her badassness, and since her departure we've had plenty of pop stars and indie pop songstresses, but nobody has really stepped up and filled Fiona's edgy role. Check out some of her new music from her performance at Pitchfork's SXSW showcase, and look out for her new album in June. "Every Single Day" "Anything We Want"

Fiona Apple - Youtube Fiona Apple 's far-too-long hiatus from music finally ended, as she made her return to the stage last night (March 14) at SXSW with a rousing concert set, which included classics, fan-favorites, and oh yes, new music. Among the old tunes that got the crowd in Austin grooving, like "Criminal," "Sleep To Dream," and "Fast As You Can," were new cuts, titled “Anything We Want,” “Valentine,” and “Every Single Night.” The debut of the new songs at SXSW served as a preview of Apple's first album [...]
