Video: Animal Collective - #1 (Live on Conan)

Yesterday's round-up of freaky new releases inspired me to choose some off-beat new videos for this round of Video Roundup : While the latest album, Window City , by The Fiery Furnaces is perhaps their most accessible, it's still a Fiery Furnaces record, so you know it's going to be quirky, as is the video here, featuring the animal costume-wearing brother and sister duo of Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger. Always a band to throw live curve balls, for its national television debut, Animal Collective chose not to go with the immediate enjoyability of either "Peacebone" or "Fireworks." Instead, Animal Collective performed the ethereal "#13 on Conan Friday night (October 5). The band still slays, with Panda Bear's usual dreamy, Brian Wilson-like vocals and Avey Tare's singing run through a demonic sounding filter. Also interesting to see Deakin up on stage, as he hasn't been touring with the band lately.

Since nailing down Band To Watch status around here earlier this year, the Ivy League Afro-beat/new wave/indie pop kids of VMPRWKND have seen their name written (usually with vowels) in the NME s and the SPIN s the Rolling Stone s of the music mag world, have secured a shit-that-was-quick deal with XL, and contributed a well reviewed track to our Radiohead tribute OKX . But you have to imagine VW found it particularly sweet to hear that David Byrne blogged about their set opening for Animal Collective at Webster [...]

I've got to say that "Peacebone" or "Fireworks" really seem like the obvious choice to play in this situation. My hat's off to them for not bowing to the Man, but it's hard not to think they're cheating themselves by laying the freaky on so thick.

Kann man einen Auftritt von Animal Collective noch seltsamer wirkend machen? Ja, und zwar indem man sie zu bester Abendstunde ausgerechnet mit einer nun wirklich nicht hitverdächtigen Nummer im US-Fernsehen auftreten lässt.
