Last night, I only had the time to watch Sonic Youth jam on a more abrasive version of "Sacred Trickster" for their glorious new album The Eternal (review probably pending) on the Late Show with David Letterman before I hit the hay. Sonic Youth made their sixth career appearance on Letterman last night supporting the band's recently released (and first since leaving for Matador Records ) album The Eternal with the a performance of the LP's lead single "Sacred Trickster." It pleases me to no end to see Sonic Youth rocking out like this after years and years of not doing so. That's not to say I haven't appreciated any Sonic Youth records since, oh I don't know, Dirty , but the band hasn't been this blatantly rocking in a very long time. The only Sonic Youth record that was a genuine stinker for me was NYC Ghosts & Flowers back in 2000. And the last two records were on an upward trajectory for sure. Honestly, we had no clue the love between David Letterman and Sonic Youth ran so deep. I mean, did you realize that Wednesday's performance of "Sacred Trickster" marked the SIXTH time they've performed on his show? And just listen to the guttural grunt Letterman lets out when they hit the song's final note last night - he can't get enough of them! Earlier this week, Matador released The Sonik Youth 's 16th album The Eternal . You've probably heard it , and if you enjoyed it you should know that the band (now with 100% Mark Ibold) will take it cross-country this summer (tour dates after the jump). So, I was flipping around last night, and at 12:29AM I turned Letterman on. Kathy Griffin was still running her big mouth. I was starting to wonder if she was going to bump Sonic Youth kind of like that GM Asshole did with Grizzly Bear before them. Luckily, at 12:34AM the Youth took the stage and tore through a great version of The Eternal lead track "Sacred Trickster". For being well over 50, they all still rock like their playing [...]

<p>The Matador Records <a href=" http://twitter.com/matadorreco rds" target="_blank">Twitter feed</a> has a number of links to Sonic Youth pictures from their Letterman appearance yesterday, which coincided with a weeklong set of clips on Pitchfork.tv. I still haven't managed to hear Sonic Youth's newest album, but "Sacred Trickster" sounds pretty solid. May have to make that my first post-Bonnaroo purchase. Thanks to Audio Perv for the video.
