Tune Yards - "Lions" Am at a bit of a loss selecting the genre categories on this one, so I've just gone for "completely awesome". The Tune Yards- Merrill Garbus . Kind of hard to describe, so you'll just have to listen to it. Drums, bass, vocals- she has the most incredibly dynamic range, a voice of amazing subtlety and power- and of course, ukelele's. Not usual fare for DC but I stumbled across this on the weekend, and I've [...]

Merrill Garbus doesn't just wear her heart on her sleeve, as the cliche goes. She holds it in her hand, arm extended, for all the world to be hypnotized by its beating beauty. A gruesome image, to be sure. But one can't help but feel every bit of raw, seething emotion when listening to her [...]

I recently saw Merrill Garbus described as ‘all-American’. This seems odd. Garbus, who records and plays as tUnE-yArDs , is certainly American; her gentle East Coast lilt is testament to that. But she exists in a space some way removed from the blue-collar anthemics that the phrase might normally bring to mind. While Garbus’ music certainly draws on elements of traditional American folk, its reference points are so broad, so geographically disparate, that it has become simultaneously American and African, European and Middle Eastern. It is rooted in place, and yet somehow placeless. [...]

Onetime BTW and impressive Dirty Projectors opener tUne-YarDs, aka Merrill Garbus, signed up with 4AD, got remixed , and then released this video of her and her friends making funny faces and singing along (and then not singing along) to the reissued and expanded BiRd-BrAiNs bonus track "Real Live Flesh." Pretty intense. The only real breaks you get from the mugging are a few shots of patterned fabric. Continue reading New tUne-YarDs Video - "Real Live Flesh"...
