The Joy Formidable What I’m about to say may seem blasphemous to some but let me explain: I’ve never been to South By Southwest. Heck, I’ve never even been to Austin. I’ve been able to gleam so much from the festival/party/anarchy through aids just like this blog and several other podcasts/instafeeds/live streams that it never felt necessary. That and I like to experience artists and bands in their natural habitat; a finely crafted hour long set at a singular venue on a tour stop. I don’t like sloppy seconds. I’m [...]

Kapela The Joy Formidable [...]

I've had this fucking post sitting in the queue since before new years and I just lost interest in the futile act of writing, so it sat. Though we're now into shorts weather here in Atlanta, it's still not too late to celebrate a few of the best songs of last year: M83 - Midnight City I do love this song, despite a few major complaints. 1. Hurry Up, We're Dreaming [...]

The UK group schedule North American run.

2011 was truly a blessed year for music. Many of my favorite groups released new records and, as always thanks to NME, I found some fab new ones to geek out over. Without further adieu, here are my Top Ten Albums and Top Ten Tracks of 2011. (Click on the album or track to purhase) Albums 10. Unknown Mortal Orchestra-Unknown Mortal Orchestra This Portland, Oregon band have a a combo lo-fi, groovy throwback sound that makes me smile. "Thought Ballune" is a must download. [...]

The third part of my review of my tips for 2011, parts one and two can be found with a click on their respective numbers. 11. Memoryhouse Toronto duo Memoryhouse sent aural bliss through the blogging world through 2010 with a series of outstanding tracks that were dreamy, soothing and beautiful, in March it was announced that Sub Pop had signed the duo (at the same time that they snapped up fellow tips for '11 Still Corners) with a [...]

Tuesday, November 15, 2011 Today's Quick Mention: There's a couple of heavy hitters in town tonight, but if you don't have the cash to see Morrissey or Aretha Franklin, I recommend either Mark Sultan and the Zoltars at the Mohawk or the Ghost Wolves at the Continental Club. I tend to stay far away from anything related to Twilight, but the soundtrack for the latest flick has a couple of nice songs on it. One in particular is a new effort from [...]
Who doesn’t love a music festival, right? It’s all the best parts of a concert–music, friends, alcohol and drugs…just lots and lots more of them! Each year, more and more of them are popping up all over the place. Whether or not you already know, Fun Fun Fun will be launching it's 6th annual event, one of the most diverse line ups ever! Fun Fun Fun Fest (FFF) is an independent genre based festival, known as one of the most relaxed, creative, and pioneering festivals in music today. FFF is a fest that [...]

The Joy Formidable released a damn good album, The Big Roar , earlier this year, and the band has made it clear that this isn't the final piece of new material you'll hear from the band this year. On October 18th, the group will release The Big More , an EP with exclusive new tracks that include a Fang Island remix of "Cradle", a live version of "Whirring" from the band's sold out Koko show, new track "Anemone" and a cover of the Roy Orbison classic "It's Over", chosen by fans via a poll on the band's [...]

WIN before you can BUY. Things are good right now for the Foo Fighters , with a tour underway, a new album Wasting Light released earlier this year, and the award-winning Foo Fighters film Back and Forth , showing the world that Justin Bieber isn't the only rockstar that gets to be on the big screen. Their tour will soon join forces with punk arm tattoo staples [...]
Doing my daily routine of reading Billboard news, I came across this group. The Joy Formidable are a three piece band from Wales and are currently located in England. From the second I heard this group, I loved the sound. The smooth melodies are cluttered with just enough grunch and agressive riffs to make a sound all of their own. If you want to see more check them out here .
Feels a little weird to be calling this the 20th anniversary of Lollapalooza even though the festival did make it's debut in 1991. There was a period of inactivity and the reformatting of the concept, going from a traveling alternative rock circus to an annual 3-day festival in Chicago that features many mainstream acts. That being said, there's plenty to see this coming weekend at Grant Park. Last week I spotlighted two lesser known acts performing this year - Midnight Conspiracy and Kyle Lucas & Captain Midnite over on Lollapalooza.com . [...]
* With the famous words, "I'm Matt Pinfield and welcome to 120 Minutes," and the video "Whirring," by the Welsh trio The Joy Formidable , MTV's much-loved, alternative music video show was back. Oh, it sure felt good to be there with an old friend like Pinfield, again. For although I've never met the man, his personable style and encyclopedic knowledge of music made him just like one of the boys back in the '90s, another music geek who was eager to trade obscure stories and obscure bands, and he gave Saturday night's show the feeling of [...]

We last saw the original “What (insert city name here) are listening to?” video by Ty Cullen, which has inspired people across the globe to venture out into their cities armed with cameras and find out what people are listening to. I have to say, London does it very well. Animal – Miike Snow Holding [...]

Photo via The Joy Formidable's Facebook Before you even finish reading this, go and listen to, " The Magnifying Glass ." Or, listen to it while reading, and you'll see why I have put this band on a pedestal. I actually cringed when the song ended at 30 seconds, teasing me, and causing me to start the sample over, and over again. Creatively blending together the chaotic sound of noise rock, but having a knack for creating brilliant, hard-edged melodies, The Joy Formidable is a band you will be telling everybody about. Formed [...]
It's into the top ten of our albums of 2011 so far, with maybe a couple of surprises thrown in for good measure. Come back tomorrow to see the records that topped our poll. 10. Metronomy - The English Riviera "A pure joy, a memory of the old-style English seaside – sandcastles and beach huts, simplicity and innocence...." Review 9. The Joy Formidable - The Big Roar "The would-be-blockbusters [...]
I've really been digging The Joy Formidable lately. Their album, The Big Roar , and specifically the track "Whirring" are in permanent rotation on my iPod right now. Here, they've remixed London-based quartet The Boxer Rebellion 's song "The Runner" (listen to the original here ). Have a listen and then download the track for free for yourself: [...]
