Already dubbed by the press/ blog world as the "UK Santigold", South Africa-born/ UK-raised newcomer MPHO makes quite the introductory statement on her debut single "Box N Locks", some of which is because it's main musical hook revolves around a catchy sample of Martha & The Muffins' 1980 new wave-punk classic "Echo Beach" , but mostly because she's already on the usually second or third album topic of yearning to break free from the pigeonholing of others. Kicking things off with the admittably charming semi-sneer "Feisty little brown girl/ Raised in Brixton town girl/ [...]

This is a hot one right here! MPHO (Mmmm-pho)is a new artist from London. I really love her debut single BOX N LOCKS . The song is about how she refuses to be pigeon holed into a certain genre of music. Her debut cd 'Pop Art' produced by Switch (MIA, Santogold), Future Cut (Dizzee Rascal, Kate Nash, Lily Allen) Rick Nowels (Belinda Carlisle, Andre 3000, Dido) and Rob Davis (Kylie) will be out in the fall. I can't wait! [...]

{MPHO} from the press release: MPHO is a British talent like no other. A genre-defying singer, songwriter and producer, she has enormous global crossover pop potential. Her debut single on Parlophone/Wall of Sound, 'Box N Locks' was produced by Switch. The track samples the legendary guitar hook from the Martha and the Muffins new wave hit, 'Echo Beach'. MPHO was born in apartheid South Africa and raised in a racially mixed family of musicians and political activists in Brixton. Her life [...]
The below artists are precisely why we do this blog. A wide collection of sounds and fresh invention, brilliantly mixing up genres and continuing to slowly push music in the right direction - forwards. MPHO Brixton has always been a mixed up place on London's map. Although often mired in it's working class roots, variety of sub-cultures and a chequered history involving riots and crime, it's also produced some of the best musicians we've ever known. This has continued with the recent arrival of La Roux, [...]

Supposed to be some ghetto chick, Making all this urban music Jah, briti saartelt on meile taas üks äge neidis saadetud. Väga äge. MPHO - Box N Locks Kas kõlab pisut tuttavalt? Sämplitud lugu on siit isegi juba varem läbi käinud, aga miks mitte veel üks kord? Ikkagi klassika. Martha And The Muffins - Echo Beach
MPHO covers Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill The proof in the pudding that MPHO (that's Mm-poh ) is not just another video blogger "star." This is one of the best covers of Running that I've heard (my other fave is Claudia Brucken's with Andrew Poppy ). MPHO has talent and taste, which was already evident from her ebullient - that's the best word for it - debut single below. [...]

There's a lot of waiting around in music these days. New acts come along with their impossible to find taster singles, then they take up acres of space in magazines and broadsheets and then before you know it, six months later, their album drops. Brixton-born Mpho is being talked up by those in the know as something quite special and whilst rooting around in someone else's box (!) at work we found a 5-track album sampler, an amuse-bouche if you will, prior to the main meal (the album, Pop Art, is out in October). This is [...]
There's too many updates today! Damnit, it's Friday...cool your jets, music industry! Ever wondered what happened when MPHO wandered onto the set of Girls Aloud 's "The Loving Kind" and started playing in Nicola's box? I imagine the above is sort of what would have happened. Oh yes: Utterly promising, one to watch for '09, etc. etc. While on the subject of MPHO, please consider this sage morsel of Tweet introspection from Mr. Darren Hayes : "Is it just me or does the name of [...]

MPHO is one of the fraichest new pop talents from Europe to look out for this year. Check out the glowing video for her debut single "Box 'N Lock" that features that infectious little guitar riff from Martha and the Muffins' new wave hit "Echo Beach." The genre-busting singer was born in South Africa and raised in a racially mixed family of musicians and political activists in the UK. Suffice to say that her life story is as colorful as her music. A press release describes that the "overriding theme of both has been MPHO's determination [...]
