Thanks to Tara and NY Mag for directing us to the most emo video of Death Cab's career and maybe history. It's fairly unbearable with its images of precious teen love and depictions of quaint suburban life. Talk about super-serving your fan base. But, in the end, shit gets real for these people. Some high school kid in Iowa is shedding little emo tears over the animated forest fire. But hey, at least it's not these guys .

Last night I watched Akira for the very first time; this morning I finished reading the essay by Thomas Lamarre titled Born of Trauma: Akira and Capitalist Modes of Destruction. This evening I watched the new Death Cab video of "Grapevine Fires" and couldnt help but make a comparison between the atomic/psychic bomb theme of destruction or the idea of nuclear apocalypse within the popular Japanese Manga, and the atrocities of the depressed american heart within this video. God Damn, Ben.

Death Cab for Cutie present the new video for "Grapevine Fires," off their gold album Narrow Stairs . The animated clip was directed by Walter Robot, a.k.a. the team of multimedia artist Bill Barminski and writer Christopher Louie. "Grapevine Fires" was initially inspired by DCFC vocalist/guitarist Ben Gibbard's up-close-and-personal encounter with 2007's California wildfires. The song was recently included on Change Is Now: Restoring America's Promise , the official commemorative CD-DVD set celebrating President Obama's inauguration. The next song to get video treatment by camp Death Cab is one the highlights from their 2008 LP Narrow Stairs by the name of Grapevine Fires. This fantastically beautiful track was inspired by the wildfires that hit California and is both lyrically impending and instrumentally gentle.
