NXNE 2010 equals roughly 650 bands playing at over 40 stages across the city in the next seven days. It's safe to say that Toronto is about to be consumed by the music industry, compliments of the 2010 edition of the North by Northeast Music Festival. NXNE features a strong and eclectic assortment of performers this year, offering rare performances from legendary musicians as well as a first look at hundreds of young, up-and-coming acts. The NXNE features a healthy mixture of home-grown and international talent including Iggy and the Stooges, De La Soul, Sloan, Kid Sister, [...]
Fuck! It's hot out. So in honor of the heat, and since I'm about to go swimming, I bring you a concert from an empty pool. It looks sweltering there too. The band, one of my absolute favorites, Les Savy Fav, played McClaren Pool in Brooklyn back in 2006. It was, I believe, the inaugural show at the pool which has since produced a torrent steady goodness. Sad too say I've never been, and it seems I'll never go. At the end of summer McClaren is undergoing renovations and the pool will be once again [...]
Sunday there was no rain really at all. The sun was out for most of the day, hot but not unbearable, no complaints at all. Started with Boris, a japanese Hard Rock band. They were awesome. The lady on guitar was really good and it was an updated, cooler version of 80's hair metal. Then they finished a song, stopped and said something pretty indecipherable about the power I think. Pitchfork this year seemed to be plagued by minor sound issues. I think that the small stage started up late and threw some [...]
One of the best live bands in the world puts out its first live album, and as one would expect, it turned out pretty great.

Does Conan still have that epic beard? I bet Tim Harrington will give it a run for his money when the band plays on Conan this Thursday. Dude is starting to look like G.G. Allen. Going to be a great show! I wish I could see it but I don't have cable... at my [...]

I feel like something harder with texture today. Les Savy Fav is a punk quartet founded in 1995 in NYC, all met while attending Rhode Island School of Design. (actually according to betterpropaganda "they moved to Brooklyn in 1996 and used an abandoned Knights of Columbus hall as an apartment and practice space") Their claimed influence "were in fact heavily influenced by the decadent head-f**k psychos Six Finger Satellite (also from P.). " Their stated ambition "to have a race for the most exciting new band since the Jesus Lizard and early Seattle scene" [...]
