Making lists of things is important. Lists are great for grocery shopping, keeping track of irresistable kisses if you're Daryl Hall, remembering things you're supposed "To Do," and the corrall...
Here's a confession: It was hard to define what the term "indie rock" meant in 2012. But this list takes a shot by reemphasizing the "independent" in "indie rock". Here's a confession to start: I don't know what the term "indie rock" means in 2012. I've made this list for PopMatters the past three years running, and I've always sent it off to my editors feeling as if I'd cheated somehow, swept a few albums underneath the banner that likely didn't quite belong there. But now, looking back over the year, I've noticed more of a subtle -- but [...]
In case you hadn't noticed, the '80s are back. They have been for a few years, but it seems like with each passing year we get more and more new bands wearing their influences on their sleeve. T... Continue reading "Who's Ripping Off the '80s This Year?: The 5 Biggest Offenders" >

Easily one of the years best albums. I cant get enough of DIIV. The video for above is amazing, as is the Memory Tapes remix below. There is not enough of this groove driven gaze around. [MP3] DIIV - Follow (Memory Tapes Remix)

DIIV just made their new track " How Long Have You Known", the track is good, but today I received their MOONS version, which makes the track better yet unsettling, so I decided to post it and let you all decide what you think. DIIV- How Long Have You Know (MOONS Remix) [...]

I've sat on this for a while, it being the archetypal tune that forever finds its way onto this blog I thought that the passage of time might reduce its sweet scent and thereby send it cascading in the direction of the recycle bin. But no matter what I try to do to reinvent what works and what doesn't I always return to the sound of the soaring indie anthem. Cole Smith of Beach Fossils is responsible for DIIV (nee Dive) and 'How Long Have You Known' is one of several sparkling efforts on their debut 'Oshin' which came out [...]

Toronto concerts worth knowing about in September, 2012. Hi again! It's time for our second installment of the monthly music picks post. September is a month to dread: students, teachers, rich people who "summer" at "cottages" all have to go back to "real life." The good news is that there's a ton of great shows coming up to ease us into fall. HOT TICKETS PUBLIC ENEMY / SEPTEMBER 2 / 8PM / SOUND ACADEMY / $25 Formed in [...]
While I'm always happy to see some of my old favorite bands like Redd Kross and the dBs release new music, I do listen to music from new bands as well. A couple things on my shopping list include new records from Brooklyn's Captured Tracks label. Captured Tracks is a relatively new label, but they've managed to release a lot music in a short time and also establish a relatively consistent aesthetic. DIIV (formerly Dive) released their first LP Oshen in June. I'm still waiting to score my own copy as it keeps selling out at [...]
DIIV's Zachary Cole Smith on his influences, looking like Eminem, and the pyrotechnic mishaps of his latest music video.

Monday Music’s the one weekly post wherein Some Of It Was True! drops its London-only rule. The sun's out, England are getting tonked in the cricket and ice-cream vans are tinkling somewhere nearby. It feels like the summers of my childhood... DIIV - How Long Have You Known? Oh god, turn it up louder, louder, LOUDER. Signed to Captured Tracks , DIIV is the new act of Z. Cole Smith, he of Beach Fossils . [...]

So, have you dreampoppers been listening to the new Captured Tracks -released DIIV LP, Oshin ? We hope so. But just in case you are all like "what's a diiv ?" we have compiled a few of the freely available tracks from DIIV . This right here is track number five off of Oshin . Listen. Fair warning, this song could take up a small space which will crash on the sofa of your limbic system. Don't worry, it's a good thing!

DIIV 's Oshin is probably my favourite album so far this year that's not by a Vancouver band , and it sounds especially awesome while walking the dog around the lake late at night. I reviewed Oshin for Exclaim! and also interviewed frontman Z. Cole Smith. "How Long Have You Known?" is one of the album's many echoing jangle pop delights. See the video for that track below.

Sultry summer days deserve slaps of all shapes and sizes and sounds. And, as you may have noticed, we've made a few changes around here lately, so it seemed only appropriate to break in the new site with a collection of things we've had on repeat while the weather's been warming up. Highlights include Hodgy Beats restructuring some vintage D'Angelo, Mario's "Let Me Love You" getting a groovy overhaul, Poolside coming with a sticky summer jam, and Big Boi and Theophilus keeping it settled, if not subtle. Oh, and that DIIV video is crazy too. [...]

I have recently been taken back by DIIV's debut album Oshin, after taking my first listen to the album I was enticed to come back to it over and over again. Here is a cut from the album "How Long Have You Known?" which you can check out the official video below. This album is sure to find some love from me in 2012, love the dream pop, melt in your ears type of sound. Has the same kind of fresh, clean sound that Youth Lagoon brought to us in 2011.
