
I’ve only more recently become a fan of Dubstep. Being a long time junglist, I suppose dark, bass heavy dance music should have been in my blood. I’m not sure why but it didn’t really play out that way. The first licks of dub I heard seemed minimal, boring and un-dance-able. Boy have we come a long way! I suppose I was just waiting for the art form to spread it wings. I first heard Esser's 'Headlock' on 2 Many Dj's 'Part Of NYE Never Dies' mix for the end of the year free cd from Mixmag. Now where the original was a catchy, 'sing a long to the chorus' type of indie/pop, this brooding number by Chicago's Midnight Conspiracy turns the pop into a dark Dubstep track but still manages to keep the 'tongue in cheek' attitude of the lyrics.
