Remember when Merge Records was synonymous with genre-defining indie rock and had a whole roster of bands whose albums you couldn't wait to get your hands on? Well, guess what? They still are, and do! The venerable Durham, North Carolina, label proves they're still up to their game with two releases this week in heavy rotation at KEXP. Bay Area veterans Imperial Teen return with their fifth album overall and their third on Merge, Feel the Sound , which, according to our Music Director, Don Yates, "continues to refine and expand upon their infectious blend of power-pop, [...]
Filed under: The Hit List Some tracks on our list of the best songs of 2010 were so gorgeous they gave us goose bumps; others rocked our freaking faces off. Some left us blissed out or melancholy, while others propelled us onto the dance floor. The common thread? Each speaks to the kaleidoscopic nature of the musical landscape today, and we're embracing the beautiful chaos with [...]
Between 1994 and 1996 Underworld created something extremely hard to do once, never mind twice - they recorded two albums of electronic brilliance that have aged so, so well they may just be timeless. Dubnobaswithmyheadman and Second Toughest... brought a real warmth and intelligence to what was essentially techno, while still able to produce dance epics such as ‘Cowgirl’. The following two albums meandered between signs of this early talent, and almost self-parodies of the fridge-magnet lyrics of Karl Hyde (2007’s ‘Boy, Boy, Boy’) but never soared like they did in the previous century. [...]
Underworld have always stood in the top tier of electronic dance music producers. But on their new album Barking , Hyde and Smith collaborate with a variety of electronic producers to create a strong, eclectic album that is their best in a decade. In 2009, a song floated across my radar (OK, the Internet) with Underworld's Karl Hyde's name attributed to it. This track, "Downpipe", by Mark Knight & D. Ramirez, featured the vocals of Hyde in a smoldering electronic number that still remains one of my favorite songs from that year. But it left me with a [...]

Underworld 's Karl Hyde and Rick Smith have been making beautiful music together for over three decades. Rising out of the ashes of early '80s new wave band Freur, the duo's sound eventually veered toward the dance floor. The result of their experimentation was Underworld, one of the most important and innovative electronic-music bands of all time. Over the course of eight albums, Underworld's trademark sound — Hyde's effortless, stream-of-consciousness vocals and Smith's layers of silky beats and grooves — has resulted in classic tracks like "Born Slippy," "Dirty"/"Minneapolis" and "MMM...Skyscraper I Love You." For the group's new album, [...]

Believe it or not, I wasn't familiar with the longstanding British electronic legends known as Underworld until I saw them perform before Radiohead at All Points West in 2008. They put on a good show but I'll admit I never gave them a fair shot. I just saw that they are giving away a new song for free. The song is called "Scribble", and will be on their new album, Barking , which will be released on September 13th. It is the radio edit of the song. It's an excellent 4 minutes of electronic wonder [...]

Underworld's new album , due sometime soon, is still known as TBA at this point. Their latest work is said to draw heavily on samples one of Europe's best paid DJs Todd Terry . Which I guess would make it make it a sample of other samples? See the latest video from the electronica legends below. The music does seem to come from a long distant time/faraway place but I'm kind of getting into it. Much like Hans Zimmer 's dog, or Oprah when riding [...]
Underworld cement their place at the top with another epic anthem, this time recruiting one of Drum & Bass's legends in the making - High Contrast . ' Scribble ' is definitely one for the summer festivals - sun going down/hands going up kind of ish! If you're quick you might still be able to grab the radio edit FREE from the official Underworld website!! That's right, FREEEEE!! "...and it's okaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyaaaaaaaaaay yyyyy".

Another week, another set of visual aid. All that and more! Let ‘em flow by clicking on the player on the right, or head below for the individual copies. Dawes Underworld How To Destroy [...]

Underworld is a veritable electronic music institution. Formed by Carl Hyde and Rick Smith in the early 80's, we are willing to bet you've heard their music (you've only seen Trainspotting, what, a couple of dozen times). Enjoy their latest single "Scribble" from their yet unnamed album slated to drop sometime this summer. We viewed this video pre-coffee and the visuals were pretty trippy. Just think of what it would look like with a face full of MDMA à la Rick Smith in the video. Enjoy! Click here to download "Scribble" for free. [...]

Drum & bass track ‘Scribble’ is available as a free download from their website…
"Scribble" é o primeiro single, do novo disco dos Underworld, que será editado no final de 2010.
Sticking to what they know best.... and absolutely killing it: Grab an MP3 for free over at UnderworldLive.com . Underworld play the We Love Sounds Festival in June. See you there for sky-kissing, hand-holding and general denial that the 90's ever finished. -Mandu
