The High Commissioners wowed us back in October with their retro blues rock, so we invited them to become guest editors. Here are their picks for the best music of 2012. Will's choice: Father John Misty – Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings would certainly take my slot for song of the year 2012. Spreading via word of mouth earlier in the year by most as the 'solo project of the Fleet Foxes drummer,' J. Tillman, here under thepseudonym 'Father John Misty,' produces a colourful mix of Californian Rock, 60s psychedelia, Folk and elements of Americana, with a wild [...]

Sydney’s Deep Sea Arcade make a kind of echo-heavy, melodic psychedelic pop that recalls later Beatles or maybe mid-nineties Dandy Warhols ; that is to say, when you listen to songs like “Girls” you have to try really hard not to really want to roadtrip out to some kind of sunny field and spin around. Why this is always the go-to image for ‘60s and ‘70s-inspired psych-rock we’re not sure, but it fits for Deep Sea Arcade – frontman Nic McKenzie’s voice and lyrics read like an echo-soaked modern-age re-up of [...]

Now that song has a video to go with it, and seeing the lads in person in the video their music starts to make a little more sense. These guys' fashion sense looks somewhat indebted to both 60s style and that of 90s Britpop - and both of their elements can be found in their music. Sydney's Deep Sea Arcade have always been a lover of the Sixties - with their kaleidoscopic sounds, Beatles and Zombies influence and Nic Mckenzie's dreamy, reverberated vocals. And you know what else they loved in the Sixties? Girls! So it's fitting, really, that 'Girls' is the title of Deep Sea Arcade's new video
