This week, M. Ward's soft talk and NOMO's Ghost Rock . In honor of its reissue on Jealous Butcher Records, we're traveling through M. Ward's 2003 album Transfiguration of Vincent . Even five years after its debut, this LP hasn't lost any punch. And its mesh of sound savvy folk pop tunes, will make it just as reissuable after five more years. We've also got some energetic afrobeat and jazz funk from Michigan's NOMO. Ghost Rock is the band's fourth LP and they continue their ongoing blend of electric instruments into the [...]
Remember when prog rock used to be about elaborate lyrical narrations, the rich sound of an organ, and talismans? Me either. But even if New York's Mirror Mirror doesn't bring back memories of King Crimson and Magma, they're likely to grab attention with their unusual song structures and haunting sound. The band's debut album, the Society For the Advancement of Inflammatory Consciousness , drops on Cochon Records on September 16th. Stones Throw Records is giving the remix treatment to one of their catalog's most celebrated hip hop LPs, Madvillainy . The collaboration between MF Doom and Madlib was originally released in 2004, and it's managed to stay on the minds of underground hip hop fans despite the genre's usual turnover rate. Keeping the remixing in the hands of Madlib will probably only bring Madvillainy a new context. This MP3 was originally titled "Money Folder," but it picked up a new title somewhere in its new, horn-rich mix. For more info [...]
On their recent tour of the East Coast, The Needle Drop's Brian Rowe was able to catch up with Deerhoof's Greg Saunier at Danbury, CT's Heirloom Arts Theater. Greg talked with Brian about what fans can expect from the upcoming Deerhoof album, and what the band is doing to get their music out there: Instead of leaking songs or releasing MP3s, get fans to record covers of the album's first single by releasing the sheet music. It seems any band of twentysomethings can put on thrifted t-shirts with neon colors and start bending the rules of rock. It's interesting to see this decade's music underground formulate its own fashion sense, but this only makes it easier to mistake Ponytail for their similarly dressed contemporaries. That being said, there's a clear difference between trying to make music and trying to make a scene. Ponytail is clearly going for the former, even though they might make scene in the process. Music video for the song Beating The Charms by the Canadian trip-rock trio Plajia. From the album Beautiful Explosion (2008).
We recently received an e-mail from a Canadian called Plajia. Plajia is different from most of the music we receive. These guys are really, really good. The most interesting thing to me is that they sent us 5 songs, and under the "genre" tab on Itunes there were 3 different genres. They describe two songs as "Rock", two as "Ballad", and one as "Psychedelic." This just sort of shows how different each one of their songs are. The band consists of 3 members. Patrick Pleau: lead vocals, guitars, keyboards and harmonica, Simon Boivin: bass and backing vocals, and Pascal Laviolette: [...]
