Jeff Mangum’s Triumphant Return: A Video Timeline

Jeff Mangum’s Triumphant Return: A Video Timeline It appears that Jeff Mangum, the lyricist and lead vocalist of wildly adored indie band Neutral Milk Hotel and one of the founders of the Elephant 6 Recording Company , is finally coming back from that dark place he left us for so long ago. Not only has he been popping up in the most unexpected (or actually, totally expected, if one were expecting him at all) places with more and more frequency over the past couple of years, but he has even broken down and played some classic NMH songs in recent appearances. Now, it seems [...]

New Video: Jeff Mangum   ”Oh Comely” live at Le Poisson Rouge, May 6, 2010 I know I’m nowhere near alone in thinking Neutral Milk Hotel’s In An Aeroplane Over The Sea  is a perfect album. I’m also probably not alone in having had discussions with close friends as to whether or not it’s perfection is dependent upon the time capsule it’s caught it. On Avery Island is amazing, and was the perfect lead up, but really  Aeroplane never had a chance to gain context. The lack of any other Neutral Milk [...]

Jeff Mangum makes another rare appearance; plays songs

jeff mangum - oh, comely (chris knox benefit NYC 5/6/10)
For the uninitiated, Jeff Mangum was the force behind indie tastemaker Neutral Milk Hotel, a band that hasn't released an album since a little before the turn of the century. Learn more about Mangum in Woefully Uninformed Weekly . Yesterday Mangum performed a few songs, including "Oh Comely" and "Two Headed Boy Pt. 23 at a benefit for New Zealand punk Chris Knox (tie-in!). The track were all created in the '90s, which is starting to feel weird, but they're solid performances nonetheless. It's good to hear that craggly voice again, even if it's not quite singing [...]

Jeff Mangum, The Clean, Yo La Tengo, Portastatic & friends played for Chris Knox @ LPR - review, setlist, video & pic by Andrew Frisicano I snuck this picture of the t-shirt... " Chris Knox (born September 2, 1952) is a New Zealand rock and roll musician, cartoonist, and DVD reviewer who emerged during the punk rock era with his bands The Enemy and Toy Love. After Toy Love disbanded in the early 1980s, he formed the group Tall Dwarfs with guitarist Alec Bathgate, much loved for their honest, unpolished sound and intense live shows. His 4-track machine was used to record most of the early Flying [...]

Jeff Mangum performs at Chris Knox benefit May 6th 2010 (with videos) Last night in New York City, Neutral Milk Hotel singer Jeff Mangum made an extremely rare public performance. It was for a benefit for Chris Knox, the legendary musician from New Zealand who is currently in rehab after suffering a stroke last year. Mangum performed songs from the now-classic second Neutral Milk Hotel album In The Aeroplane Over The Sea - the first time he has done so in over a decade - as well as other Neutral Milk Hotel songs. The full five song set was: "In The Aeroplane Over [...]

Jeff Mangum - "Oh, Comely" (Live at the Chris Knox Benefit, NYC, 5/6/10) " This video proves [Mangum] can still devastate with a guitar and his voice. It’s a rare talent, like the college professor who’s a natural at lecturing while others drone on. Not many people have the power to silence a bunch of “Bleeker Street”-yelling NYC ‘bags ." - Lucas, Chain of Knives
