Now that we've all survived the apocalypse, it's about time we got into New Years mode. We're going to keep you on your toes. This is no time to stick to any one genre. That's ludicrous. You've got to mix it up- with songs that get you dancing, party anthems, and a strong Australian focus. Why not pepper your New Years Eve with the sounds of your city, of your country. So put a hand over your heart, stand poised in front of the TV and the images of Australian icons lit up, and play [...]

Tuesday, January 31, 2012 Today's Quick Mention: I'm expecting to catch an early screening of The Woman In Black tonight. Here's hoping it's the first in a string of good films for Daniel Radcliffe. If it's not, at least he has all that sweet Harry Potter money to keep him well fed. Is the world still interesting in MIA? I know I am, but her new track premiered on Pitchfork yesterday and the amount of buzz surrounding it seemed surprisingly [...]

American rapper and dancer, Rye Rye released her first album, Go! Pop! Bang! . This talented young artist has been a protege to one of my all-time favorite artists, M.I.A. , performing alongside with her in the KALA tour in 2007, and appearing in the Paper Planes video. I attended Voodoo Music Festival in New Orleans in '07, where I was able to see M.I.A. and Rye Rye perform together at my first 3-day music festival. Rye Rye and I were both 16 at the time, and I clearly remember confusing her with M.I.A. while watching [...]

MIA made her mark, back in 2009, with her hit "Paper Planes". The album Kala was released in 2007 and steadily picked-up speed and was nominated for a Grammy, in 2009. These days, MIA has continued to release music and has just released a FREE MIX. Download it, below. For Ol' Times Sake... [...]
I love the idea of M.I.A. - the way she looks, the packaging, the lyrics, her and the fact that she is so cool - but I often find the tunes a bit disappointing. But there's at least one track on the new album that is good fun and has crossover appeal - Paper Planes ( iTunes )
M.I.A., RYE RYE ( Roseland , 8 NW 6th) Whichever team you're on in the M.I.A. debate (either she's an art school dilettante capitalizing on "radical chic" or she's the only force in Western pop culture suggesting you give a shit about the rest of the world), you can't deny that she started the most danceable conversation about global politics in our time. T.G.I. Friday Video Time, that special time in the week when we boil down 50 years of music into just five songs that start with the same letter of the alphabet. This week it's on to the letter "P". We've got songs about wizardry, planes, and a very fuzzy fruit. Click below to see what tunes made our list. And remember, if you don’t agree with us on our selections, we want to hear from you! Don’t forget, we’ll be doing the letter “Q” next Friday. Oy, that's gonna be a tough one. [...]
Like many pop-artists through the years, M.I.A.'s career has been built alongside forward-thinking producers and musicians, but few have had such a complex relationship as M.I.A. and Diplo. Last week, M.I.A. released her third studio album entitled /\/\/\Y/\, which when deciphered reads "Maya", the singer's first name. Furthering the album title's ode to digital culture, the album's cover finds M.I.A.'s face buried behind layers of red YouTube streaming bars and propped up by what could be the red bricks found in Nintendo's classic Super Mario Brothers video game. Either crudely executed or executed to be crude, both the album's [...]

M.I.A. has confirmed that her third album will see the light of day this summer. Speaking to Rolling Stone, she said that five months of work with producer Blaqstarr is coming to a close. "I definitely needed to come to music on this album, to make music. I don’t want it to be gimmicky or silly or hipstery", she explains, "The last album, I didn’t actually sit anywhere long enough for it to really be in my life and to really think about it. Now I’m putting out my next album, and the world has changed. I came up talking [...]
