10. Justin Bieber - Boyfriend This little diddy messed up late 20 year olds for 6 months straight when at first glance they thought it was a Justin Timberlake song they were singing along to. Little did they know they were humming along to the leader of the bushwacka club, Justin Beleiber. Not to mention, the video, the Nsyncer ripoff was tops. Below is a little reminder of why we loved this track even though it annoyed us. Version #2 preferred [...]
It's that time of year again. The holidays are upon us, December is flying by, it's getting colder (in theory- Nashville did not so much get the memo on that one), and the music industry is mostly on an extended vacation. Record releases have basically come to a halt, tours are winding down, awards season is preparing to gear up, and basically every single magazine and website that writes about music is releasing a year-end list in some form or another. We at No Country are preparing our own year-end lists for release very soon, but in the time being [...]

As the name suggest Hit Songs Deconstructed is a website dedicated to analysing the structure and composition of hit songs. The insight from this analysis is used to help mentor new song-writing talent. Mark caught up with Founder and Editor-In-Chief David Penn to find out more. From all of your research what is the most common technical similarity in a hit record? A short, effective intro that instantly hooks the listener into the song, a first chorus that hits early, infectious and simplistic melodies, fluctuations in MTI levels (momentum, tension, [...]

We're finally drying out from Sandy. It's the weekend after Halloween. Need any more reason to get out and celebrate? Typically the week of Halloween is one of the best out of the whole year. It's not like you can dress up like anything imaginable and parade around in public. Yet, thanks to one of the worst storms to ever hit the east coast much of the creepy, ghoulish fun was limited. Luckily our city wasn't hit as hard as others and the clean up time was much quicker. Now that it's the weekend, there's a [...]
THEE OH SEES, SIC ALPS ( Doug Fir , 830 E Burnside) John Dwyer, frontman for Bay Area garage-rock band Thee Oh Sees , recently counted Extreme Elvis, Sun Ra, Donald Duck, and Van Halen as key influences in his musical upbringing. You'd have to be crazy not to want see how that manifests itself onstage. BOBBY ROBERTS Also, read our article on Sic Alps . JUSTIN BIEBER, CARLY RAE JEPSEN ( Rose Garden [...]

It's a little known fact that Carly Rae Jepsen learnt how to sing by watching Alvin and the Chipmunks . And just by singing, she's able to commune with rodents and call dogs to attention. No. Really. Call Me Maybe has been a huge global hit this year and with its instant appeal, it's easy to see why. More recently we've had Good Time featuring [...]
So I am informed that Canadian Idol pop tart Carly Rae Jepsen 's "Call Me Maybe" was very popular recently. I wouldn't know myself, because I was too busy catching up on season five of Stargate Atlantis on DVD to pay much attention to the radio or YouTube for the last couple of months. That said, if world's most irksome rock critic Jon "Everything's Great, Even the Obvious Shit" Caramanica is any judge of horseflesh, and I'm sure he is, than apparently Jepsen was this year's Gnarls Barkley [...]
All important works of art come in trilogies. That's an undisputed fact. Ali and Frazier fought three times. Tolkien wrote three Lord of the Rings books. David Bowie recorded three Berlin albums with Brian Eno. They made three Mighty Ducks ... Continue reading

It's probably got something to do with womens' gymnastics, but Greyhound Out Of Mainline and Matthew Collings have returned to the Mancave . The last we heard from them was Big In Mogadishu (broken down into two parts, apparently, the latter of which is something called Mogadishuier ). The title is Dance Of The Mancavettes (pure perfection). So far the standout track (tracks?!) is "Ten Hundred Days," the sensatory likeness of Collings grabbing up sheets of Winford's perfectly usable guitar and crumpling them into paper wads, for [...]

Started off the second day of Ottawa Bluesfest on July 5th. "Call Me Maybe" crazy and ashamed!! (no pun intended) I just had to see Carly Rae Jepsen play at the Claridge Stage. Embarrassing to say it, I really enjoyed the set considering not knowing any of the songs. Young girls who was at the show couldn't stop their excitement and was idolizing her. She came on with a nice pretty dress and nice red sunglasses. [...]

We're just a few days past the midway point for 2012, the year of our Lord. It has been a phenomenal year for new music so far and I thought I would take a moment and reflect on the best songs we've been given so far. This was a hard list to narrow down. I did rank them in order of greatness, but I spent a lot more time on narrowing it down to the best 25 new songs than I did on the specific order in the list. In order to include more deserving artists on the list, I [...]
With Carly Rae Jepsen's recent smash, we are reminded of how great pop music can be whenever it decides to return to fun and innocence. To say you hate it is to say that you hate how much fun popular music can be. And if you hate how much fun popular music can be, well then, you must be reading this because you're thinking maybe I can change your mind, eh? Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" goes beyond the type of blockbuster summer teenage hit America has been used to hearing in recent years. Why? Think of all [...]

POP ETC share with us their favourite tracks of the year. From Carly Rae Jepsen to Kanye West, these are all massive pop tunes. Usher - Climax Love how understated the hook is on this song. Arrangement is sparse and perfect. Beautiful vocal performance and sound. Just a wonderful song all around. Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe This song is kind of all chorus, but it's a really, really, really great chorus. Kanye West - [...]
