We've been given the task of picking acts which shouldn't be missed and to be perfectly honest, this year's line up doesn't make it easy

Austin, TX psych rock outfit The Black Angels are playing Georgia Theatre Thursday with Allah-Las and Elephant Stone , and we've got a pair of tickets to give away. The Black Angels are killer live, Allah-Las were on my SXSW list but I wasn't able to catch them, and I've heard good things about Elephant Stone. Solid bill all around. Fun fact: The Black Angels took their name from The Velvet Underground [...]

Monday Music’s the one weekly post wherein Some Of It Was True! drops its London-only rule Arbor Lights - El Arbalito After a crazy, hectic, wild, whoa-fuck weekend in Berlin, all I really want to do now is listen to slowburn, sedative and slightly beautiful guitar-based instrumentals. Handily... Allah-Las - Tell Me (What's On Your Mind) Or this - wearied and watery, with a flavour of [...]

Sometimes, but very rarely, does a band come along where I think “they made this just for me!” based on my intense longing for new musicians with new albums filled with songs that sound like the music that I already love more than anything in this world. Because you can only listen to the stuff that’s been around for forty years so many times before you need more of it. Well for those of you also pining for moody, scratchy, surf-twang garage rock, I guess Allah-Las created their [...]

Seeing Nick Waterhouse in Austin has turned out to be quite the fortuitous moment. Since then I discovered his label Innovative Leisure. With that I have discovered Hanni El Khatib and now Allah-Las. The thing that has me most smitten so far is that while all of the artists I have discovered have a retro feel to them; none of them sound the same. Allah-Las sound like they could be off your parent's dusty vinyl collection; you know back when they were pulling tubes and wearing bellbottoms in the 60s. They sounds like Real [...]

I've been awaiting this album since I heard my first Allah-Las song probably back in 2010. I believe it was " Catamaran ." I was hooked by the perfectly laid-back reverb-drenched surf psych. And yes, it's true, the Allah-Las are a new band. Despite what your ears hear (and your eyes see below), they are not from the '60s. KCRW puts it in pretty right-on terms: "Try to conjure up the most quintessential LA sound with a hint of surf, 60s Sunset Strip, downtown city grime, and a trace of Americana desert folk, all mashed [...]
Take a look at Whitney's weekly rundown of the best books, films, bands and more.

The "Nuggets" boxed sets are more fun than this. Really. The exploration of 1960s surf-rock by the Los Angeles quartet Allah-Las feel like a laboratory experiment. They've nailed the sound, perfected the vibe and aced the test — much in the same way pop genius Todd Rundgren did in 1980 with his recombinant Beatles chords on his Utopia album "Deface the Music." Allah-Las' debut album, out Sept. 18 on Innovative Leisure, was produced by Nick Waterhouse, a fellow lab-rat whose time travels take him to an earlier era. It's all good that Allah-Las have brought this sound [...]

Allah-Las: "Don't You Forget" Allah-Las: "Tell Me What's On Your Mind" Impeccably capturing a late 60s garage/surf ethos and channeling the sound through a "Play With Fire" era Rolling Stones filter, California's Allah-Las , have crafted several head turning new tracks, "Don't You Forget It" and "Tell Me What's On Your Mind." The full length (9/18 on Innovative Leisure) was produced by vintage perfectionist Nick Waterhouse (excellent in his own right). This is lo fi reverb done the right way. Critics may file this on the softer side of [...]
Allah La’s - Tell Me (What’s On Your Mind) (by InnovativeLeisureRec ) California’s Allah La’s continue to churn out the hits. 60’s garage revival done right with lovely melodies. Also, catch the Daytrotter show .

It's been quite the week for California garage rock - first, Ty Segall garners heaps of critical adulation for "Slaughterhouse", and then Thee Oh Sees announce their gazillionth album in a time frame of six years. Maybe not that much, but I've obviously lost count. And there's nothing wrong with that - record labels used to pressure artists to release multiple albums in the same year. Didn't The Beatles release "Please, Please Me", "With the Beatles" and "Hard Day's Night" in 1963? So perhaps the Allah Las work deliberately slow because they're pop perfectionists. After countless sporadic gems, the local [...]

Since releasing a few of last year's best vinyl singles , Nick Waterhouse and the Allah-Las have emerged as two of the west coast's more promising up-and-coming acts. Where Waterhouse dishes out blistering bursts of sweaty old school R&B with his backing band, the Allah-Las revel in vintage sun-baked Californian psychedelia with hypnotic swirling surf guitar riffs and insistent foot-tapping grooves. Waterhouse and the Allah-Las may record strictly with analog equipment and feature musical styles steeped in the sounds of another era, but as their time-warped music spins around the turntable it also feels vital, refreshing, and oddly of [...]
Immaculately constructed psych-pop in the vein of ? and the Mysterians, 13th Floor Elevators, the Nuggets comp, and The Byrds circa "Eight Miles High." The Allah Las are from Los Angeles and record for the Innovative Leisure imprint, which is lights out at the moment. This song is some smoked-out 60s beach cruiser music - or what Tony Starks eloquently branded "paisley darts."

by Bill Pearis DOWNLOAD : Nick Waterhouse - Some Place (MP3) Nick Waterhouse Meet angel-faced, starched-shirted, vintage glasses-sporting producer and musician Nick Waterhouse, whose driver's license says he's 24 but whose record collection suggests he was born in 1942. Amy Winehouse might be gone, but old-style soul and R&B lives on via musicians like Charles Bradley, Adele, Sharon Jones and L.A.'s Aloe Blacc. Now, here comes a kid from Huntington Beach with an ear for some [...]
