Seeing Nick Waterhouse in Austin has turned out to be quite the fortuitous moment. Since then I discovered his label Innovative Leisure. With that I have discovered Hanni El Khatib and now Allah-Las. The thing that has me most smitten so far is that while all of the artists I have discovered have a retro feel to them; none of them sound the same. I've been awaiting this album since I heard my first Allah-Las song probably back in 2010. I believe it was " Catamaran ." I was hooked by the perfectly laid-back reverb-drenched surf psych. And yes, it's true, the Allah-Las are a new band. Despite what your ears hear (and your eyes see below), they are not from the '60s. Since releasing a few of last year's best vinyl singles , Nick Waterhouse and the Allah-Las have emerged as two of the west coast's more promising up-and-coming acts. Where Waterhouse dishes out blistering bursts of sweaty old school R&B with his backing band, the Allah-Las revel in vintage sun-baked Californian psychedelia with hypnotic swirling surf guitar riffs and insistent foot-tapping grooves. Immaculately constructed psych-pop in the vein of ? and the Mysterians, 13th Floor Elevators, the Nuggets comp, and The Byrds circa "Eight Miles High."
