Filed under: The Hit List A "riff" is defined as a short, repeating musical theme that forms a song's framework. Thus, guitar riffs are the basic building blocks of rock 'n' roll -- and we've gathered the greatest of the great. Emotional impact, cultural significance and good old-fashioned recognizability are just as important as being flashy or hard to play. No list of "bests" is going [...]

Rock's loudest voice of dissent played their first gig on Irish soil last night since their victory over X Factor for last year's Christmas No. 1. The gig, which took place at the O2 Dublin, was also the band's first ever non-festival appearance on our lovely island. Rage Against the Machine opted for a minimalist-enough stage set-up in comparison to some last night, but the loud, angry vocals and spine-tingling guitar riffs more than made up for it. The eager crowd had channelled their anger long before arriving at the O2 and certainly enjoyed themselves. [...]
Christmas Song of the Week: "Killing In The Name Of" by Rage Against The Machine
It truly is a Christmas miracle! For the past 4 years, a Simon Cowell ( American Idol ) act has ruled the UK chart at Christmas time. It was topped by Shayne Ward in 2005, Leona Lewis in 2006, Leon Jackson in 2007 and Alexandra Burke in 2008. This year, Cowell planned on another easy victory with his X-Factor artist Joe McElderry's Christmas song "The Climb." But Rage Against The Machine had other plans for Cowell. The band started an on-line campaign urging their fans to buy their song-- "Killing [...]
So Rage made it to number one and now all we have to do is sit back and watch capitalism fall, right? We'll be wearing matching slacks - or North Korean jeans - in no time. I know that, in reality, all we did was make the guys at the top even richer, but let's look on the bright side; some of the excess cash is going to charity, we get some decent shit on prime-time Christmas radio for once and Rage's ambitions of revolution were sort of, kind of, a little bit realised. I reckon [...]

Rage Against The Machine have won the battle for Christmas Number One ahead of The X Factor's Joe McElderry. 'Killing In The Name', first released in 1992 and backed by an enthusiastic online Facebook campaign by fans, beat his cover of Miley Cyrus's 'The Climb' by more than 50,000 sales to reach the summit of the UK singles chart. The track sold more than 500,000 copies in the week leading up to the end of business yesterday (December 19). McElderry clocked sales of 450,000 - although sales of his CD fell away in the final run-up.Upon hearing the [...]

Well, it happened, the finale of X factor and that can mean just one thing, another guaranteed Christmas number one for Simon Cowell and co, right? Well, probably, yes. But there's a few other singles released this week, which are surely far better, at least give them the 'glory' of winning Single Of The Week by registering your votes right here. Well done to Frankie and The Heartstrings who's Twitterati ensured a resounding victory with over 400 votes in last week's vote over Meursault . Here's the contenders for [...]

The battle for this years Christmas UK number one single and overall Yuletide supremacy has this week grabbed a generous slice of worldwide attention. Started as a slightly tongue in cheek Facebook group campaigning to halt the commercial hold Simon Cowell and friends command over the festive season sales, ` Rage Against The Machine For Christmas No.1 ` has injected some much needed fun and an excuse to upset the current trend. "The demise of the X Factor phenomenon is along way down the line, any opportunities for cheap shots and flesh wounds should [...]

an inbox full of joy today. an email from my man 'steve' (not his/her real name) working his/her way through central london via g20 police lines and pens trying desperately to find the head of a pig or banker scum to smash the fuck in (with an amusing picture he/she won't let me post in case his/her [...]
Looking back at last week, we were flooded with votes pouring in from The Midwest for both 30db (Brendan Bayliss & Jeff Austin) and Van Ghost. These two bands were fighting it out for a while, but the energetic supporters of Van Ghost ultimately left 30db in the dust when we looked at a number of great covers of Don't Let Me Down . Congrats to Michael Berg, Jennifer Hartswick and the whole Van Ghost team on their first Cover Wars win. Cover Wars has focused on a number [...]
