The title of the new Vivian Girls album Share the Joy was inspired by 1960s and '70s hit machine Burt Bacharach . Bacharach wrote a song called Share the Joy , that bowled over singer/guitarist Cassie Ramone. The song doesnt' appear on the new album. Here's another song, I Heard You Say , off Joy , which is due April 12. The band plays Chicago shortly after the release (April 22 at Logan Square Auditorium). I Heard You Say - [...]

Thursday, October 7, 2010 Today's Quick Mention: Unfortunately, I missed out on Phantogram and the Strokes over the last couple of days, so I'm really hoping the rest of my show shenanigans will work out a little better. Tonight the plan is either Spoon at the Mohawk or Black Joe Lewis at Antone's. Should be fun ... if I make either. While I appreciate the Vivian Girls and have found a number of songs appealing, I can't say I'm as diehard [...]
With their punky/shoegaze DIY take on the classic girl group combo AND their hyper-intelligent vinyl record aesthetic, Brooklyn's Vivian Girls could easily be The Vinyl District's house band. If we had a house. Which would have easily burnt down now. For certain. And they're certain to be testing the fire codes in that back room of Comet Ping Pong Sunday night, August 22nd. Joining them are DC's Brett and the Whispers [...]

Top 20 Albums of 2009 by Benn Ray This is the first time in a long time where I felt like I really had to work to get to 20 great albums in a year. Usually I end up with more than 20 that I have to edit down. I call this year in music The Year of Meh. Except for the 20 albums below. None of them are "meh". I stand behind every one of these records. 1. MORE by DOUBLE [...]

Vivian Girls Everything Goes Wrong (09.2009 In The Red) If you like this, check out: Tiger Trap, Go Sailor, Talulah Gosh, Black Tambourine, Henry's Dress, The Aislers Set, The Flatmates, The Shop Assistants, Cub, Dolly Mixture, Sarah Records, Slumberland Records, Early K Records While I felt Vivian Girls debut last year was a bit overrated I've really got nothing against the band. In fact I think they are pretty darn cool. With their new LP, the girls find themselves writing better songs and more of them. I do however have a bit of beef [...]
