Laura Barrett - The Wood Between Worlds Classically trained pianist surfs eBay looking for midi controllers, ends up bidding on a kalimba, and a musical career dedicated to "neurotic sci folk" is born. Toronto's Laura Barrett (also a member of Hidden Cameras) has followed up two EPs of ornate pop with the whimsy of her first full-length album, Victory Garden , released in Canada through Paper Bag records. (Toronto) Last Wednesday my girlfriend Karen and I went down to see Laura Barrett and Valery Gore at the Horseshoe. I have been hearing Valery Gore's song Worried Head for a couple of months now and really enjoying it. Also, since my secret crush Laura Barrett was opening up, AND because Karen was OK accompanying me to see my secret crush, I had high hopes for this show. I was first introduced to Laura Barrett back in 2003 when we were both volunteering for the NXNE music festival [...]
Laura Barrett - Robot Ponies Not to distract from the highly anticipated Old Time Relijun show coming up next week, but here's another exciting announcement from the JustSayin Summer Concert Series . You've never heard the thumb piano played with such zeal, if you've heard it played at all. Laura Barrett uses her thumbs like palms on congos, agressively plucking the kalimba's tacile percussion into graceful melodies. Pitchfork says she your " quirky, crafty, half-hip/half-nerdy friend who [...]
Finally, an EP for those interested in Joanna Newsom covering "Weird Al" Yankovic parodying Nirvana.
It's a perfect time for Laura Barrett's solo EP - Earth Sciences - to be re-released. Her quirky voice and proficiency with the kalimba fits nicely into the niche carved out by Joanna Newsom and the success of the Hidden Cameras will certainly help get her name out, as will signing with Canadian indie launching pad PaperBag Records. All of these things are all well and good, but to be fair to Laura there is a lot to like about her. Musically, she's found a path that not many people would follow. I [...]
Laura Barrett's Earth Sciences EP melds the vibrant, effervescent tones of the kalimba (an African thumb-piano, literally translated as "little music") with her earnest and intimate voice. Laura is also known as a member of The Hidden Cameras. She composes songs that run from the childlike to the funereal. Earth Sciences EP comes out February 26 on Paperbag records. "Deception Island Optimists Club" "Robot Ponies" [...]
Just in time for the festive season I find Laura Barrett's eerily beautiful 'Robot Ponies' has an eerily beautiful video, making the most of old microfilm editions of Pravda. It's a great song, and the imagery really suits it. Ms. Barrett has also just released her second EP Ursula on Ta Da! Records, and you can find out more about it here . I'm not entirely sure how to buy it if you're not in Toronto, but I'm sure all will be made clear. Laura Barrett & Final Fantasy - Robot Ponies [...]
