The proclaimed "Godfather of Hip Hop" was known for his biting social commentary and black activism. His delivery was honest and sometimes painful to hear, because it hit exposed nerves in the social conscience. Scott-Heron's I'm New Here brought the spoken-word legend back from obscurity, and it appears he was back on a good path. [...]

What up, soul kids?! It's a scorcher on the block where my shell-toe Adidas hit the street~ all the freaks and geeks who've been hiding in their houses these past few months are live and in full effect this afternoon. The sun is casting its glorious, cosmic rays onto the golden grill of Buck-Toothed Bobby; Jack-Ass Jimmy is holdin' down the corner where he religiously shakes down the locals for spare change; and Loretta the Loudmouth is hollerin' some unintelligible nonsense as she throws all her dude's shit onto the lawn in a fit of not-so-temporary insanity. In the early 1970s, Gil Scott-Heron popped onto the scene as a soul poet with jazz leanings; not just another Bill Withers, but a political voice with a poet's skill. His spoken-voice work had punch and topicality. "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" and "Johannesburg" were calls to action: Stokely Carmichael if he'd had the groove of Ray Charles. "The Bottle" was a poignant story of the streets: Richard Wright as sung by a husky-voiced...

Just had my first listen to Gil Scott Heron's new album I'm New Here . It's been 16 (or 13?) years since he released an album and 40 years since his debut Small Talk at 125th and Lenox and the era-defining 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' . The album was made with XL Recordings boss Richard Russell. As you'd expect it's a mix of spoken word, futuristic blues, dark-stained socio-political life poetic ruminations. What you might not expect is that the man above still sounds as inspired and god-damn urgent as [...]
The revolutionary poet is back. 100% badass.
