Hypnotic Brass Ensemble have had their flights cancelled so they will be here for a few more days. As a result, they'll be playing a special volcano benefit show in The Sugar Club tonight (18th April). Doors are 8pm and its only €10 in. Last week, at the Iggy Pop book signing , he mentioned this is his favorite band right now. I totally see why, and I think my New Orleans friends would be into these guys. The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is from Chicago, and you can tell the difference between a group like this and say Rebirth that come out of New Orleans. It appears to be the horn section. I think trumpet players in New Orleans see legends like Louis Armstrong. and think that to present a big sound one has to blow hard (don't take this wrong). [...]

The 19th Akbank Jazz Festival is commencing tonight. Tomorrow's big deal is Terje Rypdal at Aya Irini , but we'll be skipping it to check out the NYC Brass band Hypnotic Brass Ensemble . I've mentioned a few posts ago that HBE is responsible for one of the best afrosoul offerings this year. The 9 piece is known for their notoriously fun live shows, and they've played Glastonbury and The Big Chill among others this year, and an amazing (and oft repeated) trivia about the band is 8 of the 9 [...]

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble released their self titled record on May 8th. This fantastically tallented jazz and funk band hail from right here in Chicago. I certainly recommend checking out their record which this video is drawn from.
