Video: Mayer Hawthorne - The Walk

Somehow I missed this song when it was first released back in late 2011.  So today's song is an "in case you missed it" selection from Mayer Hawthorne 's 2011 album, " How Do You Do ."  If you have never listened to Hawthorne's music, he has pulled his sound straight out of the late 602s, but it doesn't sound stale.  This is one of the best "break-up" songs I have heard in a long while, and the video that goes along with it is pretty great, with the scorned lovers taking literal shots at [...]

Some dismissed Mayer Hawthorne’s debut, A Strange Arrangement as overly contrived. No sophomore slump as Michigan soul man finally lives up to his fullest potential. What's wrong with a little blue-eyed soul? What's wrong with a little Stevie Winwood? Maybe some Robert Palmer? A tad bit of Michael McDonald? A dusting of Robin Thicke or Remy Shand? And, of course, don't forget the poster boys for such a movement, Hall & Oates. Really. What's wrong with them? Can you honestly say that you don't genuinely (i.e. non-ironically) perk up whenever you hear "You Make My Dreams" or "Rich Girl" come...

Though we can understood the criticism lobbed blue-eyed soul man Mayer Hawthorne 's way about him not really adding anything new to his exercises in vintage R&B beyond the novelty of him being this nerdy-looking, horn-rimmed-goggled white cat with the sweetest falsetto this side of Curtis Mayfield, three years in the game, we still can't help but be left impressed with his well-crafted mimicry of those classic Motown days.
