Somehow I missed this song when it was first released back in late 2011. So today's song is an "in case you missed it" selection from Mayer Hawthorne 's 2011 album, " How Do You Do ." If you have never listened to Hawthorne's music, he has pulled his sound straight out of the late 602s, but it doesn't sound stale. This is one of the best "break-up" songs I have heard in a long while, and the video that goes along with it is pretty great, with the scorned lovers taking literal shots at [...]

Sure, April showers bring May flowers, but with the fourth month of the year also comes a slew of great artists coming to the 9:30 Club and Merriweather Post Pavilion . As always, you have the chance to win tickets to each of the shows below... Mayer Hawthorne and the Country , Tues 4/17 Mayer Hawthorne , the moniker of Andrew Cohen, is a neo soul multi-instrumentalist based out of Los Angeles. Hawthorne has cited R&B heavy hitters like Curtis Hayfield, Barry [...]
Mayer Hawthorne, modern-day soul singer and Detroit-native, is bringing his swirl of 60’s pop and 70’s funk with a contemporary cherry on top back to North America to awaken the birds and the bees.

Some dismissed Mayer Hawthorne’s debut, A Strange Arrangement as overly contrived. But the record was truly one of the great growers of 2009, helped in no small measure by Stones Throw Records and Hawthorne’s vintage connoisseur taste. Not to mention, Hawthorne's rare knack for pleasantly deluding people into believing that they could do what he does with the right snappy retro suit. Soon, a bunch of major labels were trying to break down Hawthorne’s door and sign him to lucrative deals. [...]

Following on (belatedly) from Eclectic Eavesdroppings Favourite Albums of the year, here are my Favourite Songs of 2011 . Compressing the musical year into a mere twenty-five songs is a tough task for a music junkie like myself. Listing the songs in order of preference is near impossible. But either way, I’ve done my best to get a list together and even though it’s incredibly subjective, it sums up a very good year in music. Stream it as a playlist on YouTube over HERE or download a copy of the whole mix over HERE . [...]
We've got to hand it to the folks in Detroit. When fans found out that Canadian rockers Nickelback were set to perform at Ford Field during halftime of the Detroit Lions' annual Thanksgiving Day game, they were none too happy, especially given the city's rich musical history. In fact, one fan started an online petition , which received over 52,000 signatures, to have them replaced. While there are any number of more appropriate acts that deserve the spot, if the Lions wanted to go with a contemporary act that has a sound that is rooted in Motown, they could [...]

Music as an art form is never easy and straightforward to quantify. You could go by record sales, but in contemporary times, with the explosion of social media and the implosion of the record company, such a statistic is just about meaningless (to listeners at least). You could gauge which songs are most popular amongst your friends and extended community, but this ignores the greater musical and cultural landscape. I’ve heard it said that music is the universal language. This is completely ludicrous, as so much of the music I adore is not loved by my family or friends, much [...]

Mayer Hawthorne Anyone who has heard Mayer Hawthorne’s 2009 album, A Strange Arrangement, already knows what to expect with his newest release: more Motown-influenced retro soul delivered in falsetto. And while Hawthorne certainly delivers that, How Do You Do contains a few surprises, including one track featuring Snoop Dogg as you’ve never heard him before. Hawthorne is a Michigan-native, and though he no longer lives there, his love for Detroit and the music that has come from there shines through in [...]
Michigan soul man Mayer Hawthorne has been on the scene for three years now and shows no signs of going away. Hawthorne has received his share of criticism for not really doing anything new to the sound he pays homage to; however, no one can deny that his blue eyed soul is welcome in today's scene. Much like Hall & Oates and Michael McDonald did decades ago, and Robin Thicke more recently, Hawthorne has made survivors and fans of the Motown era take notice of white men who don't look like they'd ooze soul. "The Walk" is [...]

♫ Mayer Hawthorne - Can't Stop (ft. Snoop Dogg) Ok album. Easy listening but the debut's magic charm is missing somehow. But sweet video for "The Walk" and I like Snoop's appearance. 5/10 [Quickies are mini-reviews that can fit into a 140 character tweet. They are of albums that people already know of but perhaps are curious about our take on it. What did you think of the disc?] Band links: Facebook
No sophomore slump as Michigan soul man finally lives up to his fullest potential. What's wrong with a little blue-eyed soul? What's wrong with a little Stevie Winwood? Maybe some Robert Palmer? A tad bit of Michael McDonald? A dusting of Robin Thicke or Remy Shand? And, of course, don't forget the poster boys for such a movement, Hall & Oates. Really. What's wrong with them? Can you honestly say that you don't genuinely (i.e. non-ironically) perk up whenever you hear "You Make My Dreams" or "Rich Girl" come...

Though we can understood the criticism lobbed blue-eyed soul man Mayer Hawthorne 's way about him not really adding anything new to his exercises in vintage R&B beyond the novelty of him being this nerdy-looking, horn-rimmed-goggled white cat with the sweetest falsetto this side of Curtis Mayfield, three years in the game, we still can't help but be left impressed with his well-crafted mimicry of those classic Motown days. On his sophomore effort How Do You Do , Hawthorne continues to cater to those constantly whining of acts these days being unable [...]
