At the expense of my poor mushed mental melon, it's finally complete: The G-Man's Top 50 albums of the year... January is all about lists: New year's resolutions, dietary declarations, bucket lists and, of course, the all important, all-encompassing "best of"s. In reality, placing works of art into a static order of ranking is akin to choosing your favourite child. Sure the hyperactive little fella may drive you nuts when all you want is [...]

Just Music That I Like's Favourite Albums of the Year 2013 - Part Three Previously posted: Part One // Two // Three // Four // Five 15. Golden Fable - Star Map Facebook // Order CD An album which has criminally managed to stay off many peoples radar this year, perhaps due to the self-released nature of the album, still with support slots [...]

The Staves - 'Dead & Born & Grown' (UK Release: 12 Nov '12) // Words: Saam Das Watford trio The Staves deliver their debut album, following heralded live performances and appearances on albums by Fionn Regan and Tom Jones . The raw, delicate folk of the Stavely-Taylor sisters is consistently pleasant, evocative of a bygone era. Unfortunately, 'Dead & Born & Grown' is a little too unadventurous. The music [...]

"We just want to make music that people feel a connection to, that they enjoy listening to and that we like...” If your surname has the word stave buried within it you better end up being musical. Emily, Jessica and Camilla Staveley-Taylor, three sisters from Watford, and together The Staves, are one of the folk bands to look out for in 2012. Their brushed-acoustics and unfussy delivery will no doubt draw comparisons to Laura Marling, while support slots with James Vincent McMorrow and Mt Desolation confirm they are certainly aiming to plough the turf [...]

Our man in England reports... Thoughts on Shows by Tom Sweeney The Staves are sisters; Camilla , Jessica and Emily , hailing from Watford, just north of London. They sing in close harmony, accompanied by Jessica’s simple-but-effective Paul Simon-like fingerpicked guitar. Conveniently blessed with complementary vocal ranges, their music is [...]

Two years ago, I ran a series of guest posts from people involved in Irish music featuring their top 5 Irish acts at that moment. This time around, I thought I'd shift the focus to international and as...

Pictured above are the three sisters from Watford, collectively known as The Staves . This British trio should soon be on every folk-pop fan's lips with their debut album scheduled for release next year. If you like the likes of Laura Marling, The Pierces, Birdy etc., then their new single "Mexico" will most certainly appeal to you. Basked in a warm glow of harmonies, the song is a thing of understated beauty. The melodies tread lightly and unobtrusively, yet they draw my full attention and reduce me to silence every time. There's not necessarily new ground to [...]

Recent support on James Vincent McMorrow's UK tour, The Staves are a promising sister English folk trio from Watford made up of Emily, Camilla and Jessica. Raised by a Welsh mother with a penchant for male voice choirs, that influence has translated itself onto the self-titled track from their debut EP Mexico . Glyn and Ethan Johns, a father and son duo who combined, have worked with The Eagles, The Faces, Ryan Adams, Laura Marling and Kings Of Leon co-produced the band's debut album which is forthcoming in 2012. It’s taking the world a while to catch on to The Staves, even though they’ve been together for twenty-odd years, but that’s because they are three sisters. Musically their gestation period has been a little shorter, although they've still been floating around for some time. They recently featured as the Guardian’s New Band of the Day ( with a quote from this very blog when we first featured them as a New Wave back in April ) and have popped up on a few of the more folk inclined sites over the last few months as well as [...]
Three sibling making music together since childhood have now become one of the most promising acts as of late. The Staves are Emily, Jessica, and Camilla Staveley-Taylor and their perfect 3-part spell binding harmonies are the reason we're anticipating the upcoming Ep which will be released on December 11th. 'Mexico' is simply beautiful, sit back and enjoy the lovely visuals above.

The Civil Wars just announced today that The Staves, three sisters from the UK, will be opening for their spring U.S. tour dates. If you haven't heard of this folk trio with beautiful harmonies, then definitely check them out. I first heard them sing when they opened for Mt. Desolation in London last fall. It seemed that most of the audience had never heard of them, but we were instantly mesmerized. The three sisters, Emily, Jessica and Camilla Staveley-Taylor have been traveling around the UK opening for James Vincent McMorrow on his recent tour dates. The lineup of [...]

Photograph by Thomas J Speight Here on Rarities , I am all about the female voice in music. From female singer-songwriters to female-fronted bands, lots of talented ladies have caught my eye since I started this blog over two years ago, and this next bunch of new faces is no different. The Staves are Emily, Jessica and Camilla Staveley-Taylor, three sisters in their early 20s from Watford in the U.K. Some things to note about these [...]
Crank up the resolution if your rig allows it, because as simple as the video is, it’s best served with the clarity directors Benji Davies and Jim Field of Frater intended. The Staves have a matching style of elegance and simplicity to their music, pairing harmonies with one or two guitars. Those harmonies however, are [...]
It would be easy to say that England's sibling modern folk trio The Staves are simply Laura Marling times three. From the similar vocal shadings to the delicate acoustic melodies to word that both Ethan Johns -- who produced Marling's two most recent albums -- and his legendary father Glyn (Who, Beatles, Clash, latest Ryan Adams) will both be working on the The Staves' debut 2012 long-player, it would appear that the path has already been laid out before them. But Emily, Jessica and Camilla, the early [...]

Emily, Jessica, and Camilla Staveley-Taylorhave been making music together since they were children, growing up in Watford, England. Brought up in a house that echoed to the sounds of Simon & Garfunkel, Crosby, Stills & Nash and The Beatles, singing in perfect 3-part harmony came naturally to these three sisters. Having started gigging in local pubs and cafes, The Staves are now captivating audiences on much bigger stages - earning rapturous encores with their exquisite songs of love & longing. Guaranteed to give you goosebumps, their extraordinary intertwining voices melt the most cynical of hearts. The Staves' Mexico [...]
