Julianna Barwick | photo by David Blake Hutchinson To kick off AiMT 2011 , here's what is by far the most Flash-overload feature to ever grace the site. Hopefully it won't make your browser tweak out. Inevitably these SoundCloud streams will start to vanish, which will make this post a lot less fun. Enjoy them while they're here! Also check out last year's ambient list . #20 [...]

It Can Be Done But Only I Can Do It [FXHE] [...]
On Replica , Oneohtrix Point Never creates a sonic mlange composed largely of '80s refuse, but it's so lacking in recognizable reference points that it precludes retro sample-spotting and wistful nostalgia alike; but it's a fascinating listen in its own right. Since reading Simon Reynolds' Retromania: Pop Culture's Addiction to Its Own Past this summer, I've spent an inordinate amount of time consciously and sub-consciously policing the music I listen to for retro-ness. Is there a purpose beyond comfortable familiarity that justifies the "Try a Little Tenderness" sample on "Otis"? What are the implications of evoking [...]

Pregnant - Letter to a Friend Daniel Trudeau is Pregnant , and Pregnant shouldn't be a stranger to FMLY members. His music has been a favorite in this community since long before his exceptional new album Life Hard: I Try was released via Mush Records this past September. We're excited that he'll be celebrating FMLY Fest with performances in both LA and Oakland! I asked Daniel to share some inspirations with the site, and he obliged. Follow the link to see what's been floating his boat! [...]

We've been hearing a lot about MIDI poster child Daniel Lopatin and the retro-futurist pop he creates as half of Games/Ford & Lopatin , but what we've really been salivating for is another offering from his solo outlet Oneohtrix Point Never . Lopatin was poised to create a masterpiece after releasing several increasingly fantastic albums of block-stacking ambience over the past few years, but opted for a change in direction after his last album, Returnal . Focusing on his new project Games with Tigercity's Joel Ford (later assuming the moniker Ford & Lopatin) meant that [...]

I first got hold of some Oneohtrix Point Never (OPN) music when good friend Konx-om-Pax gave me the promo for his compilation album "Rifts" (which he had done the sleeve for). From that moment on I have been hooked on what has been on offer from the US producer also know as Daniel Lopatin. His constructs within his production, his use a samples and of course his love of the Juno keyboard are heavy influences on how his work. With a new album on the way in the shape of "Replica" we have both [...]
