February has always been a tough month for the art form of Hip-Hop; not only did J Dilla and Big Pun pass in February, but this month also saw the demise of Big L: one of the greatest emcees of all-time. It seems like the youngest people with the most amount of talent are always the first ones to go, and in Big L's case, it's no different. Although he didn't have a long illustrious career in the rap game, many people still consider him to be one of the greatest emcees to have ever graced the mic. At the [...]
Think of the first James Bond movie you ever saw as a kid. Was the opening action sequence, a staple of the franchise, not the most thrilling thing your young eyes had ever witnessed? In a few short minutes you learned everything you needed to know about 007: he’s clever, he’s lethal, he has toys cooler than anything your parents let you buy, he has women you can only dream of, and he never ever gets hit by the innumerable bullets shot at him. Those crafty escape or chase sequences set the tone for the rest of the film, bringing [...]

This post might have been better suited to last week, but I realized too late that last Tuesday was the 12th anniversary of NY (Harlem?) MC Big L 's death. It struck me that I've never done a Big L-themed OSM before, so it seemed like high time to do one. Big L is of course, Lamont Coleman who got hooked up with Lord Finesse when he was a teenager and eventually became a member of the celebrated D.I.T.C. crew. It's been 10 years since Big L died. I know a lot of people get glorified after their death, but Big L deserves way more respect than he got in his short lifetime. As far as straight up lyricists go, you can't get much better than him. He was wild as hell and if you ever want to hear some sick ass freestyling just look for some of his sessions. Here's the video and mp3 for one of his most classic songs and one of my personal favorites. Ayo, you betta flee hobbes, or get your [...]
