As soon as I saw the logo for Noah and the Whale I wanted to hate them harder than anything I have hated in ages. When I saw the video for the single, "5 Years Time" on Subterranean last week I wanted to hate them even harder, if that was at all possible. I mean, shit, they LOVE Wes Anderson (notice the font ), they named their band after Noah Baumbach and " The Squid and the Whale " ( excellent fucking movie), and jesus christ did they look like disingenuous hipsters in the video. British pop collective Noah and the Whale celebrate the release of their overdue debut Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down with a free show at Virgin Megastore in Union Square today (noon), followed by a gig at Mercury Lounge. You probably recognize their cheerful single "Five Years Time" from those Saturn Outlook commercials, an international hit which finally has an album to its name. Call them what you will...neo-folk, anti-folk, etc, but Noah and The Whale are definitely refreshingly clever indie-pop with an overtly folksy twinge and an unabashed Wes Anderson infatuation that strongly influences their aesthetic. La formula es sencilla; folk-pop con grandes dosis de optimismo, silbidos, palmas y maravillosos coros. In between reading 18 books on Charles Darwin's life between 1842 and 1844, I popped down to 93 Feet East the other night. To see some bands? Don't be ridiculous. I went to the launch of Liberal Youth, the new Liberal Democrat scheme to indoctrinate the future leaders of society. I must admit Nick Clegg gave quite a rousing speech but I spent most of the night calling it the Hitler Youth because I'm hilarious. Free food and wine though, can't complain!
