These guys sampled the drums from "Be My Baby," one of my favorite 60's songs performed by The Shangri-Las and produced by one of my musical heroes, the pop mastermind Phil Spector. Trying to study for a midterm (I know, right?!), and I keep getting distracted. A recent conversation with a friend led to the bringing up of English musician Natasha Khan, otherwise known as Bat for Lashes , and I've been listening to her all weekend. Yet another friend of mine has a band that is quickly gaining popularity, at least around Chicago. Empires is a soulful "indie-rock" band that is getting a lot of attention lately. They just released a full-length, for free mind you, and had their record release show which went excellent. Natasha Khan is the brains and voice behind Bat for Lashes . The band left a nice imprint on the music community in 2007. They are currently up for the 3 nominations for the Plug awards. They are up for best new band, best video, and Natasha is up for best female artist. There were a lot of mixed reviews about Fur and Gold .
