Sub-Pop doo-wop for an indie-rock sock hop from the Unicorns' Nick Thorburn and Man Man's piano-puncher Ryan "Honus Honus" Kattner. A dark take on doo-wop by an indie-supergroup is a terrible premise for an album -- and referring to it as "doom wop" does little to make the case that Mister Heavenly is more than a contrivance crafted by already famous musicians, whose celebrity all-but guarantees it's commercial success. With a cast that includes Man Man's Honus Honus, the Islands' Nick Thorburn, Modest Mouse's Joe Plummer, and—as a touring member—actor Michael Cera, Mister Heavenly is easily one of the more bizarre supergroups in pop music's history. Honus and Thorburn are the two larger-than-life musical personalities that dominate this outfit, instantly flying their respective freak flags and taking over songs like "Pineapple Girl" with ferocious hooks and eccentric lyricism. We are psyched to hear that Mister Heavenly 's debut album Out of Love will be released August 16 via Sub Pop. Now, if they'd only setup a Philly show date already, all will be forgiven for making us wait so long to see them live. But a new album is a good sign that a tour will be coming around our way soon.
